Younger generations are embracing their differences and celebrating what makes others unique.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">But when it comes to the workplace? Views and practices are stuck in the past, and being different\u2014not just another cog in the machine\u2014proves challenging for neurodivergent employees.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">EduBirdie surveyed 2,000 Americans aged 20 to 43 with neurodivergent conditions, such as autism, ADHD, dyslexia, dysgraphia, dyspraxia, Tourette&#8217;s syndrome, and mental health disorders, to understand how their conditions have affected their professional lives. The result shows that while the workplace is becoming more accommodating, there&#8217;s still plenty of work to do.<\/p>\n<h2 style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"The_neurodivergent_workplace_A_broad_spectrum_of_struggles\"><\/span>The neurodivergent workplace: A broad spectrum of struggles<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Neurodivergence is a broad spectrum. While Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD) is the most common condition, accounting for 48% of neurodivergent Gen Zers and millennials, it also encompasses conditions such as autism (14%), dyslexia (11%), and Tourette\u2019s syndrome (2%).<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">One thing that is commonly shared by those with neurodivergence? Mental health struggles, which 63% admit they deal with alongside their condition.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><img decoding=\"async\" alt=\"63% of neurodivergent people suffer from mental health conditions\" src=\"https:\/\/s3.amazonaws.com\/blog.site\/images\/neuro%201_1728300593.png\" style=\"width: 100%;\"><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Can people with autism work? Absolutely. As can those with ADHD, Obsessive Compulsive Disorder (OCD), personality disorders, and the full range of neurodiversity conditions.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">However, the workplace can still feel daunting to those who think differently. Some 34% admit to struggling socially, while 21% say they feel constantly stressed and misunderstood at work.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><img decoding=\"async\" alt=\"45% of neurodivergent people feel supported in the workplace\" src=\"https:\/\/s3.amazonaws.com\/blog.site\/images\/neuro%2013_1728300598.png\" style=\"width: 100%;\"><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">One of the biggest struggles of being neurodivergent in the workplace? For most neurodivergent people, their condition remains taboo in the workplace, with 23% choosing never to discuss it with their colleagues.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><img decoding=\"async\" alt=\"23% of neurodivergent people hide their conditions while at work\" src=\"https:\/\/s3.amazonaws.com\/blog.site\/images\/neuro%205_1728300594.png\" style=\"width: 100%;\"><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Keeping neurodivergence a secret requires masking\u2014attempting to fit the mold of a \u2018typical\u2019 person. However, fighting against the brain can have seriously harmful consequences.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Somebody with Tourette\u2019s can keep a tic to avoid disrupting their colleagues, for instance. Still, it requires a considerable mental effort\u2014with 82% of those with Tourette\u2019s admitting they suffer from fatigue due to managing their condition\u2014that contributes to stress, impacting productivity and performance.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><img decoding=\"async\" alt=\"91% of neurodivergent people mask their symptoms at work\" src=\"https:\/\/s3.amazonaws.com\/blog.site\/images\/neuro%206_1728300595.png\" style=\"width: 100%;\"><\/p>\n<h2 style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"The_silent_struggle_Why_neurodivergent_people_conceal_their_condition\"><\/span>The silent struggle: Why neurodivergent people conceal their condition<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Neurodiversity doesn\u2019t mean somebody is unintelligent or incapable. Yet, biases plague the recruitment process. Some 75% of neurodivergent candidates believe hiring processes treat those who are different unfairly\u2014whether they\u2019re being overlooked because of their condition or hired solely to fill inclusivity quotas.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><img decoding=\"async\" alt=\"54% of neurodivergent candidates believe hiring managers treat them unfairly\" src=\"https:\/\/s3.amazonaws.com\/blog.site\/images\/neuro%208_1728300595.png\" style=\"width: 100%;\"><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">The challenges faced differ depending on the condition. For those with autism in the workplace, maintaining relationships (81%) presents the biggest challenge. However, for those with dyspraxia, fatigue (71%) is the highest hurdle.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">But one thing most share is fear of judgment\u2014a worry for 58% of neurodivergent employees. The concern isn\u2019t just that they won\u2019t be invited to after-work drinks but that it will affect their career progression (45%) or result in their dismissal (34%).<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><img decoding=\"async\" alt=\"45% of nerudivergent people fear disclosing their condition will affect their career progression\" src=\"https:\/\/s3.amazonaws.com\/blog.site\/images\/neuro%207_1728300595.png\" style=\"width: 100%;\"><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">These aren&#8217;t irrational worries\u2014they\u2019re borne from the fact that most neurodivergent people have had enough bad experiences to fill a resume. Often positively. Despite the challenges it presents, those with the condition can thrive in the workplace due to their attention to detail and hyper-focus (51%).<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Likewise, dyslexia at work can boost empathy and understanding, making 48% of those with the condition more receptive to the needs of challenges\u2014a vital skill for roles that rely heavily on teamwork or customer service.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">As for dyspraxia in the workplace, struggling with motor skills forces neurodivergent people to think outside of the box, strengthening their creative side (64%).<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><img decoding=\"async\" alt=\"82% of neurodivergent people believe their condition provides strength in the workplace\" src=\"https:\/\/s3.amazonaws.com\/blog.site\/images\/neuro%2012_1728300597.png\" style=\"width: 100%;\"><\/p>\n<h2><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Accommodating_unique_thinkers_and_unlocking_neurodivergent_potential\"><\/span>Accommodating unique thinkers and unlocking neurodivergent potential<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Neurodivergence offers a range of benefits for employers to capitalize on, but unlocking these superpowers requires education and accommodation.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">With 58% of neurodivergent workers believing a lack of understanding presents the main barrier to inclusivity, 35% believe HR and management could do with some extra training.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><img decoding=\"async\" alt=\"35% of neurodivergent people believe mangers and HR require additional training\" src=\"https:\/\/s3.amazonaws.com\/blog.site\/images\/neuro%2010_1728300596.png\" style=\"width: 100%;\"><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Perhaps HR departments could turn to social media for support\u2014given that 64% of neurodivergent people say it has had a positive impact on their wellbeing, providing a platform to share their experiences and connect with others.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><img decoding=\"async\" alt=\"64% of neurodivergent people feel social media positively impacted their lives\" src=\"https:\/\/s3.amazonaws.com\/blog.site\/images\/neuro%203_1728300594.png\" style=\"width: 100%;\"><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">When it all gets too much, 31% of neurodivergent people say flexible or remote working policies help them to get through the workday.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Necessary accommodations will depend on the condition. For 33% of people with dysgraphia, accommodations such as modified communication can make a real difference.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">However, with neurodivergence and mental health struggles intertwined, access to mental health services and support is a must for 24%.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><img decoding=\"async\" alt=\"31% of neurodivergent people say flexible work improved their ability to work\" src=\"https:\/\/s3.amazonaws.com\/blog.site\/images\/neuro%2011_1728300597.png\" style=\"width: 100%;\"><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Nearly 40% of neurodivergent people admit that financial stress, driven by low salaries and tight budgets, weighs heavily on their well-being, both in and out of work.
