Leadership is a word that needs not have a definition as much as love does, for it is something each person understands in their way. In line with this, leadership can be expressed to be the ability to influence a group of persons to take certain actions or inactions. Simply put, leadership occurs when one member of a group modifies the performance competence of others in the group (Ibrahim et al, 2019). The recent changes in the global market have mandated organizations continuously adapt and change alongside the world. In times such as this, the significance of leadership is more evident as urgent and pressing problems require rapid decisions and this burden generally falls on the leader. Leadership skills are for managing change.
Thus, under this climate, leadership has gone even further than its ‘highly sought-after and highly valued commodity. The objective of various leadership is to promote the excellence of the members of an organization to achieve desired results.
The study of leadership has posed some questions as to what makes one a leader. Northouse discussed two main approaches, the trait theory of leadership and the process theory of leadership. The trait perspective asserts specific individuals possess unique natural or inborn characteristics that endow them with leadership, and these traits are absent in others who are deemed non-leaders. These traits comprise physical factors (height, weight), personality features (extraversion, self-confidence), and other characteristics like intelligence and fluency. The two popular styles of leadership are the transactional and transformational leadership styles.
