Astronomy is the oldest of the natural sciences, dating back to historic period. Ancient astronomers had the ability to distinguish between stars and the planets. Stars remain relatively fixed over the years whereas planets move freely. Astronomy is arguably the oldest science. The night skies & astronomical bodies have been a source of wonder & speculation since the development of early civilizations. The term ‘Astronomy’ derives from an ancient Greek phrase meaning the laws or science governing the stars.
According to History of astronomy (2016:04) Edwin Hubble discovered the universe was expanding, the galaxies were moving further and further apart and Einstein was able to drop the cosmological constant ultimately the expanding universe gave risen to the big bang theory that all the matter in the universe once occupied a single point in space which then exploded scattering matter over the entire universe (History of astronomy, 2016:04). Sir Isaac Newton explained the laws of motion and gravity to say, why objects when projected upwards comes with the same acceleration downwards and why the planets continued to orbit around the sun (History of astronomy, 2016:04). According to History of astronomy (2016:04) Galileo was the first to make extensive observations of the cosmos with a telescope, he then found the moon was heavily crated, whereas previously it had been believed it was a smooth perfect sphere furthermore he also discovered the moons of Jupiter showing not everything in the cosmos orbited the earth.
Joseph Von Fraunhofer discovered that when sunlight was scattered, large number of spectral lines were actually observed. The formation of the solar system- According to Ancient and Astronomy (2014:18) The formation of the Solar System is estimated to have begun 4.6 billion years ago with the gravitational collapse of a small part of a giant molecular cloud. Most of the collapsing mass collected in the centre, forming the Sun, while the rest flattened into a protoplanetary disk out of which the planets, moons, asteroids, and other small Solar System bodies formed.
