There’s a boy named Stanley Yelnats IV who was arrested because he is wrongfully convicted steal the sneakers of Clyde Livingston who was the famous baseball player and donate his sneakers to for a charity. He was been sentenced in Camp Green Lake for 18 months. He was a kind of boy that has no one friends and he always bullied. He thinks when he was riding in a bus to go to Camp Green Lake that this is just a regular camp that you can enjoy and nothing to worry. But when he sees the surroundings in the window, there’s no lake in there. When he arrived at Camp Green Lake, he met Mr. Sir that have a lot of sunflower seeds, and when he asked Stanley to have a drink, he didn’t give it to him. After that he met his co prisoners Zero, Zigzag, Squid, Armpit and Magnet the guys who will be with him in the tent. These guys dig holes every day, five feet wide and five feet deep, and if they have found something interesting, they can have a day-off. Warden always said that it is done because it can build character. Stanley Yelnats IV have experience a lot of misfortunes because their family have a curse that passed into generations. The family of Stanley have a quotation when misfortunes happen “no-good-dirty-rotten-pig-stealing great-great-grandfather”, whose name is Elya Yelnats. Elya is in love with Myrna and he wants to be his future husband. But there’s Igor who likes Myrna. Father of Myrna decides that either the two has a bigger size of pig, he can take the hand of his daughter. Elya becomes desperate and known Madame Zeroni. Madame Zeroni gives a piglet to Elya to carry it in the mountain and sing with it. When he carry it in the mountain it became bigger. In exchange Elya should be carry Madama Zeroni too in the mountain and when he neglects it, Madame Zeroni cause curse in his generations. When the time comes when the dad of Myrna’s let decide, whose pig is the bigger pig, he can’t decide because the size is alike. So, he asked Myrna if who she wants to be married, the girl is given a hard time to choose between Igor and Elya. So, Elya decides to make Myrna choose Igor and the pig was his present for the wedding. Elya is sad because he thinks Myrna choose her, but she still has a hard time choosing him between Igor. It made him disappoint. Elya decides to go to America and forget his promise to Madama Zeroni to carry her in the mountain. In America, Elya meets Sarah, Sarah don’t leave him even though there’s a misfortune ahead if she be with Elya. And the song that Elya sings to the pig was pass in the future generations.
Stanley experience digging a hole for the first time and it is very exhausting for him, he didn’t know if he can made it through in the end of the day. He sees Zero who was the fastest finish to dig. And he wants to finish it too, to make him rest for the rest of hours. Next day he sees a fossil in his hole and he give it to Mr. Pendanski and ask if he can have a day-off but Mr. Pendanski only laugh because it’s just a fossil, there’s no wow factor for the warden. Until there’s a time that Stanley saw a lipstick tube and give it to X-ray because he thinks that he become in trouble if he can’t give it to the leader. Then another day X-ray pretended that he sees something interesting and the warden is glad to see it. The warden ordered the others to keep digging. The tube has a KB initial. So, who was the owner of the lipstick? Kate Barlow is a local school teacher who falls in love with an African-American citizen who sells onions whose name is Sam. The two gets close when Kate is asking for help to do some repairs for his school and Sam is always been willing to fix it. Then one time Kate kisses Sam and there’s one people who sees them. And it’s not accepted when a white girl falls in love with a black guy so many people are getting angry to them. Sam and Kate try to escape but Sam was being gun-shot. And it will be the start, why there are no rains in Camp Green Lake. Kate Barlow becomes a criminal when she killed a sheriff that she asks for help to escape with Sam. Instead of helping her, the sheriff asks to Kate kiss her. And when she killed the Sheriff, she said that it is the wish you requested. Kissin’ Kate Barlow is her trademark because it’s her trademark to every guy he kills there’s a kiss mark left on the body. Along the years, Kate robbed many banks and she encounters Stanley’s great-grandfather and robs him too. She left Stanley’s great-grandfather in the desert. But luckily, he survived because he made it to the God’s Thumb. Trout Walker which was in love with Kate before was getting poor, He was very rich before because he was the owner of the lake, but when there’s no rain happen in the Camp Green Lake, he has no resources too. He comes to Kate with his wife, a former student of Kate in Green Lake. They try to force Kate to reveal where the money she stolen but Kate refuses. She instead caught a yellow-spotted lizard and bit her to death and tells them from now on to start digging.
