A variety of movies have plot twists that no one could even imagine. For example, in ‘The Dark Knight’, Batman was faced against a serial killer/psychopath named ‘The Joker’ (he was the only enemy throughout the movie so far) and towards the climax of the film, the Joker had his goons kidnapped Harvey Dent and Rachel Dawes, put them in two different buildings and had Batman and the police officers go to one of the buildings. However, only one person survived, Harvey Dent was severely injured; while Dent was in the hospital, Joker was able to manipulate Dent and turn him into a villain, he was called, ‘Two-Face’. In ‘Casablanca’, a plot twist occurred towards the end of the movie. Rick Blaine had a second plan up his sleeve, he planned to sacrifice his love for a better cause. Rick helped IIsa and her husband Victor escaped on the plane. These are two great films that have had great success throughout the years, these movies are still watched constantly to this day.
In my opinion, ‘Casablanca’ is a five-star film, the setting, theme, and plot were nicely orchestrated. This film had its creativity and the pace of the film wasn’t going too fast or slow. ‘Casablanca’ is a film you won’t lose track of, the actors and actresses perfected in their roles to elaborate on what’s taking place scene to scene. There were many film techniques used throughout the film that helped this film take-off. For example, parallel editing (cross cutting) is a technique that alternates two or more scenes that often happen concurrently in various locations. Additionally, the Kuleshov effect was another positive affect for this movie. This effect is a mental phenomenon by which the viewers derive more meaning from the interaction of two sequential shots than from a single shot in isolation. Parallel editing took place in ‘Casablanca’ when Victor came back to the Rick’s bar late at night with Carl to heal his injury. The parallel editing occured as the scene switched back to Rick and IIsa hiding out in the room. As Rick stepped out of the room to investigate the problem, parallel editing commenced once again as the camera went back on Carl and Victor talking downstairs. The Kuleshov effect took place in the movie as Major Strasser was shot and killed by Rick.
This is a must-see movie, as it portrays all the aspects of a five-star movie. Although it is a depressing era, the film finds a way to have a positive and happy ending in its own way.
