In the passage 'Babylon Revisited' by F. Scott Fitzgerald, the main character Charlie is trying to get his daughter back, by doing this he is trying to prove to himself that he is a new man.
One example of him trying to better himself to show he is a new man is when he is at the bar. ''No, no more', Charlie said, 'I'm going slow these days'. Alix congratulated him: 'You were going pretty strong a couple of years ago'. 'I'll stick to it all right', Charlie assured him. I've stuck to it for over a year and a half now''. When Charlie was offered another drink he rejected it because he has a one drink a day limit. One of the reasons why Honoria was given to her aunt is because of his drinking problem. By limiting himself to one drink, he proves that he has it under control and he has changed into a new and better man.
Another example of him proving that he is a new man is when he sees Lorraine and Dunc at a restaurant. ''What about coming back and sitting down?', Duncan asked. 'Can't do it'. He was glad for an excuse. As always, he felt Lorraine's passionate, provocative attraction, but his own rhythm was different now'. In this quote, Lorraine and Dunc asked Charlie if he wanted to get together, but he didn't want to. He felt his rhythm was different now meaning that he changed, and he was not the same person he was when they first met. This helped him show himself that he was a new man because he didn't get drunk like they do or act like they do anymore.

Another example is when he is talking to Marion about his money. ''I suppose you can give her more luxuries than we can', said Marion. 'When you were throwing away money we were living along watching every ten francs. …I suppose you'll start doing it again'. 'Oh, no', he said. 'I've learned. I worked hard for ten years, you know-until I got lucky in the market, like so many people. Terribly lucky. It won't happen again''. In this quote, Marion is saying that he is just going to throw away his money just like he did in the past. Charlie says that he has learned his lesson about what happened in the past and it won't happen again. This proves to himself that he has money to take care of Honoria and that he is a new man.
Another example is when Lorraine and Duncan show up at Lincoln and Marion's house and they get everyone upset, and Marion gets mad at Charlie. ''…You mean, she's changed her mind about Honoria?'. 'She's pretty bitter right now. I don't know. You phone me at the bank tomorrow'. 'I wish you'd explain to her I never dreamed these people would come here. I'm just as sore as you are''. In this quote, Marion is upset that Lorraine and Dunc came to her house, and she thinks that Charlie invited them there. When Charlie says that he is just as sore as she is, it shows that he really has changed, and doesn't want to hang out with his old friends. This shows that he is a changed man and doesn't want to go back to that part of his life, and just desperately wants his daughter back.
In the story 'Babylon Revisited' by F. Scott Fitzgerald, Charlie wants his daughter back to prove to himself that he is a new man, and not the man he used to be.
