The United States of America has been politically divided for some time now. It seems like we are more polarized than ever. The strong hatred between the Democratic and Republican party is overwhelming. The United States is a Democratic Republic, where we are all supposed to vote based on the outcome of the discussions in Congress. Americans aren't willing to sit down with someone from the other side of the ile and have a conversation. The Left and the right inability to meet in the middle and make any meaningful change through simple compromise is the biggest obstacle Americans face from a legislative standpoint, especially when it comes to the 2nd Amendment.

The Republican party is seen as a strong advocate for gun rights. Republicans deem that any type of governmental regulation on firearms is unconstitutional. By regulating the 2nd Amendment, it would be a clear infringement to an individual right to bear arms, which is clearly outlined in the Bill of Rights. Republicans hold truth that every citizen should have the right to protect themselves, their family, and property. While the 2nd amendment is a God given right enshrined in the US Constitution, many believe the amendment is outdated for our society. There have been numerous Republicans office members who have supported the regulation of the 2nd Amendment. Senator Susan Collins, the Republican Senator from the State of Maine supported to expand background checks and restricting the sale of some high capacity rifles (Everett & Levine , 2019).

John McCain, former Republican Senator of Arizona, proposed expanded background checks for gun buyers to the Senate (Reilly, 2013). We need to prevent guns from falling into the hands of people who are mentally unstable and criminals to prevent tragic events. The Democratic party acknowledges the citizens right to bear arms, although they believe that 2nd Amendment Rights are subject to reasonable regulations. Regulations that will keep the population safe from gun violence, such as stricter background and mental health checks. This proposition is fair considering the amount of shootings America has seen throughout the years. According to the Gun Violence Archive (2019), there have been 11,391 gun related deaths, 22,543 gun related injuries, and 319 Mass Shootings in 2019. One shooting is more than enough to regulate guns across the US, handling and operating a weapon is a privilege, not a right. As some Democrats may seem the operation of a weapon as a privilege, it is a God given right endowed by the US Constitution. The right to bear arms is a constitutional amendment, which is found in the bill of rights. The 2nd Amendment is an inalienable right to self defense.

The right of the people to keep and bear arms will not be infringed by any means. Taking away and or regulating a right, is stripping Americans of their freedoms. At every level of Government, the GOP receives far more contributions from the NRA. In order for Congress to deal with the constitutionality of the 2nd Amendment, both the Left and the Right need to sit down and have an honest conversation without any lobbyists, PAC’s, or interest groups corrupting them. The conversation is not the problem, it's how we deal in the conversation that is the problem. American political parties are so fixated that their ideology is right, that there is no such thing as compromise. If Congress cannot put their personal differences away, especially when it comes to the safety of all Americans, they need to resign from office and let the new wave of candidates come in to fix their mess.
