Over the past 10 years, both wild and domestic animals have been threatened by California wildfires in and around California. The domestic animals are sometimes left behind by their owners in a rush to get away from the fires to a safer place. Some animals are lucky to survive with few injuries but others have major injuries and may die. Some animals rely on wildfires for food and water. Animals in the wild have 3 main ways. One is flying away, another is burrowing, and the last is running. Wildfires can be beneficial to the environment, but they can also be dangerous to animals.

When a wildfire is out of control and heading for a town or city, the owners of many house pets including cats and dogs leave their pets behind. Those pets then don't have anywhere to go, and no survival skills to live in the wild. Some of the deadliest wildfires have pushed people to leave behind all their belongings. These fires are very dangerous and burn down houses and can do so much more than that. “There was also a cat who suffered burns and smoke inhalation from the fires who is now on the road to recovery after receiving critical medication and spending time in an oxygen tent”, - American Humane states. This cat is an example of some of the serious injuries that these wildfires can create. Inhaling too much smoke can be as serious as a broken bone. “... Ventura County, public shelters have taken in 56 horses, 30 dogs, 25 cats, 7 chickens, 6 rabbits, 4 goats, and a bird…”, - NBC news claims. The California wildfires can be very destructive.

When a wildfire spreads to a forest with wild animals the instincts of the animals have to kick in to survive. According to Atlas Obscura, there are a variety of tactics wild animals take to survive a wildfire. One of those tactics is flying away from the fire for birds and other things with wings. Another tactic is hunkering down underground for small rodents like chipmunks and squirrels. The final tactic for surviving a wildfire in the wild is running away for larger mammals that don't have wings and can't fit underground. There three tactics save many animals from burning in a fire but the fire will still destroy the territory they live in. After a fire “For the animals that are able to escape they usually come back” (Anna Klusmer Atlas Obscura). When an animal comes back it is really hard for the animals for the first couple of weeks because of no food and water.

Wild animals that had their homes destroyed in a wildfire will often come back to the burnt area after the fire runs its course. Deer comes back to feast on the rich tree saplings filled with lots of nutrients from the fire. Some animals such as the black-backed woodpecker even rely on the burnt soft wood to drill in and snatch a tasty bug. Now since firefighters are putting fires out it is hard for this animal to get food for lack of softwood. This problem is leading the black-backed woodpecker to extinction. Other animals also rely on the fires for food and shelter so should we really be putting them out in wild areas or let them stop naturally?

Through my research, I can state that domestic animals suffer from California wildfires. Wild animals survive using three main ways, running, hiding, and flying. And some animals even rely on wildfires for food and shelter. I think firefighters should let wildfires burn in remote areas but put them out when nearing a city or town.
