Due to a decline of elephants in certain parts of African, I would like to propose a plan to help increase the population of these amazing creatures. I want to provide information to help you understand more about elephants and the areas they live along with the effects of losing them and the dangers posed to them. I will also include my idea on how we can work together and coexist peacefully together.
African elephants live in a savanna biome which is a tropical grassland. This ecosystem produces warm temperatures all year and has the highest amount of rain in the summer. The savanna is described by grasses and dispersed trees that do not form a closed canopy. Because there is so much grass in the savanna, there are very many grazing animals. This biome has a variety of soil but they are not suitable for farming. There are two species of elephants in this biome: the savanna elephant and forest elephant. There are a lot of other biomes in the world. The desert biome which is the driest of all other biomes can only form due to this low level of rainfall. This biome has the lowest amount of rainfall which is about 12 inches a year. This biome has four major biomes, which are hot and dry, semiarid, costal and cold. The chaparral which is a part of each continent and have varying types of terrain which include mountains and plants this biome is created when cool water and ocean or sea combines with high temperature landmasses and produce mild, rainy winters plus hot and dry summers. The temperate broadleaf forest produces a lot of moisture which leads to the growth of large trees. The yearly rainfall is pretty high and is distributed evenly throughout the year. Last is the closest to the tropical savannas and that is the temperate grassland. This grassland does not have many trees except along the rivers and streams, the annual rainfall is 10 to 30 inches with severe and frequent droughts.
Elephants in Africa are affected by a few different threats, one in which is escalating poaching for ivory and meat. This is causing a decrease in elephant populations even with a ban on international trade. Poaching hurts more than the population but also the less elephants we have the more an ecosystem can be destroyed. Elephants use their tusks to dig for water during the dry seasons, doing this not only provides them with water but other animals that share the habitat with them. When forest elephants eat, they provide huge paths and gaps in the vegetation allowing smaller animals to move around and causing dispersal of tree seeds for new growth.
Growing demands of human population is another problem threatening the elephants. This is causing crop raiding where an elephant will go into a populated area and eat the crops humans have planted. With more populations of humans and crops the higher the chance that a person could be injured or killed by an elephant. This can also cause damage to property around where the elephants have been or stampeded.
Using the logistic population growth model of limited environment, we can see that having to many elephants could be damaging on an ecosystem, having to many moving through wooded areas can cause reduction in tree cover which would cause and expansion in grasslands and shortage in woodlands which could threaten certain species such as rhinoceros and bushbuck which use the trees for food and shelter. With any species having to many would provide a shortage of food for both the elephants and any other animals that would eat the same food as them thus passably endangering other species. With regulation of population growth, we can see that if we stop a population after reaching carrying capacity, we can achieve a more cohesive world. Elephants play a very important role in the African savanna ecosystem as a seed disperser and their excrement carries valuable nutrients that maintain the woodland, grassland, and biodiversity it supports.
I believe that sharing our land would work really well with community populations. Coexisting with elephants can produce a very thriving community. While crop raiding will still pose problems fixes could be established. Housing the crops for humans in greenhouse type building could help with this problem as well as elephant excrement can be used as a free fertilizer for these crops. Sharing land with elephants can also generate income for tourists who come to see the elephants, as well as employment opportunities for villages and towns, such as guides who can help people see and learn about how important and amazing these animals really are as safely as possible. With elephants helping other animals to find water and provide food for other animals through their excrement that houses certain nuts and barriers to eat in turn cause thriving herds for humans sharing the land to hunt for meat because these animals will also have plenty of food as well. It could not happen overnight or in a month but with all the advancements we have made there has to be a way for all us to coexist with these elephants and not cause harm to either species.
