The purpose of this essay is to analyze open source software and proprietary software, and as a result, to determine how they differ from each other.
Open source which means copyright holder grants the user to design, modify its content, redistributes the system or application for users who are using it. By doing so legally, author has released a license which can be enable all the users, programmers or even in the field of IT experts for changing or redesigning and development for many applications without infringing the law of copyright.
Open source is in a manner of collaboration of public or community that can share their ideas, especially to programmers who are contribute or exchanging their source code for software development in order lead a better operation of a system to all the user. The identities of all user who are take part in distributing code, shares their ideas are revealed to the community. As such, these can be enhanced the quality program of a system and improve open-source technology.
Open source operating system is basically easier to get the information than proprietary operating system. As a result, it has increased people in use. The persons who are using open source operating system have been expanded responsibility and loyalty for using this system, rather than perform an illegally tasks or modifying into harmful object on the system deliberately. It is because the system software that has been amended is for all people to use it including person who are trying to modify the system software as well. So that, there has no other reason anyone will attempt to create detrimental system software into it. Besides that, open source can help most of the companies keep on going up to date technology of development. As such, this will enhance the reputation, product, quality of software system and revenue, even retention of customer as well. Due to the advanced technology has no terminated, but keep upgrading in every unpredictable timeframe, so that open source can help users, developers, or IT experts to produce a high quality, the latest system without spending tremendous capital. In addition, it typically has a few individual programmers to test and debug the system software. Therefore, it has become more reliable to everyone. Moreover, it does not have the problems which can caused in incompatible within any platform except for proprietary operating system. On the other hand, some expert researchers did not believe that open source could produce a quality software system under an uncertain circumstance. It is because the deficiency of empirical proof such as collected data, productivity, quality and so on are the important things that discovered at the tail end of development.
The example of open source operating system is Ubuntu. It is a Linux-based operating system that can be defined as one of the most efficient open source operating systems in the world. The next one is Fedora, it is another well-known Linux-based operating system, which is conceivably the best open source operating system after Ubuntu established. The following is Linux lite, this is free operating system that can work on affordable hardware. After that, Solus is a free open source new operating system which can be used on the desktop. It belongs to Linux family that was created in the year 2012. React OS is also an open source operating system. It has a numerous people download in many countries. Linux is considered as open source operating system as well.
Proprietary is opposing from open source which is known as closed-source. It can be defined as software or applications that is owned by a specific person or an organization, it must be confidential to keep their source code and prevent the other people modify its system. It has also some restriction to modify it. For example, a group of people are unable to distribute or redevelop an application or a program software except publisher or developer team who establish that program software.
The copyright of system is retained by developer without authorize to the user right of reorganization of a certain program. For legal basis, author described that there have specific terms of use in agreement which is end-user license agreement, this is the contract that established by licensor which user must be agree with it in order to possess the right of using this program. Software patents and the source code have exclusive right to the owner.
Vendor usually distributed compiled format in proprietary operating software, the source code typically is written in high level programming languages which is human readable version code. In another aspect, most proprietary software program is distributed without source code, some vendors distribute the source code, or make it available to customers. For example, users who have obtained a license can modify the source for their own ways but cannot redistribute it. In addition, some software vendors sometimes employ confused code from preventing users who would deconstruct to divulge its architecture, designs, or extract information from the object.
There have some advantages of proprietary, the first one is it has a competitive advantage. It is because when a company or an organization invents a platform or software program, they do have a specific trade secret or procedure design method and they don’t share their minds to public, so that all these products are owned by those company or organization. The second is the firm who has established their own software might able to suffer a lot of profit. Since they hold unique product without share to the community, customers might rely on their software function or availability, so if company dell in their products with a higher price, they can gain a high profit on their business.
For the disadvantages, due to advanced technology is keep enhancing, proprietary program always needed to upgrade, this might cause extortionate expenses on upgrade software.
The example of proprietary operating system is Microsoft Window, it is a group of graphical user interface product of operating system family. Microsoft Window has function of multiprogramming available in 32-bit or 64-bit versions. Some of the popular version is include Windows 98, Window ME, Window XP, Window 7, Window 10, etc. Window 10 is released in 2015 which is recently we use in nowadays.
To summarize, open source software and proprietary software are different and each has its own advantages and disadvantages from being used.
