In the history of art, we can always see that the artists get inspiration from the artwork by other artists to re-create their artworks. It shows that different people got different perspective when looking at the same thing and artist would like to express their perspective by creation of artwork. In this essay, we are going to discuss two artwork 'Bonheur de Vivre (Joy of Life)' by Matisse and 'Les Demoiselles d’Avignon' by Picasso are inspired by 'The Large Bathers' by Paul Cézanne’s.

Let's start with the brief visual analysis of 'Large Bathers'. It is painted around 1900 during the period of post-impressionism. From the painting, we can find there are some common elements found in impressionism like the image of object is captured by just a glimpse without much details and the colors used are vary and bold. In the painting, we can see that there are many naked women. They are drawn in less details but we can still tell that they are naked women with the skin color used and the body shape. The outdoor scene is also drawn in very brief with not many details but we know that they are on the beach with blue sky. The environment in the painting looks crowded as there are many naked women gathering together and they seem chatting with each other happily.

When we look at another painting 'Les Demoiselles d’Avignon' by Picasso, we can find that the subject chosen for this painting is also 'naked women' which is same as the 'Large Bathers'. The environment chosen was also quite similar, it seems that the women finished bathing near the river with rock on both sides, and they are chatting with each other. The composition of the painting looks very similar to 'Large Bathers'. However, Picasso used a new perspective to express this scene. The body naked women are broken up in different pieces and reassemble, which looks like having three dimensional views. This style is also known as cubism. We can see that Picasso somewhat is inspired by the Paul Cézanne’s, The Large Bathers to draw the painting with Picasso's own new perspective added.

In the painting 'Bonheur de Vivre (Joy of Life)' by Matisse, we can also find that the naked bodies are used as the subject in the painting, showing the natural state of human body. This choice of subject is also the same as 'Large Bathers'. In this painting, Matisse used different treatment and perspective to draw the painting; the human body occupied smaller space in the frame (as compared to the two previous painting) to show more of the environment surrounding, the colors used are also more colorful and bold. It creates the feel of fantasy world in the painting as Matisse tried to add some extraordinary color to the object like green and orange on human body and the tree. However, we can still see that the composition and the theme is very similar to 'Large Bathers' by Paul Cézanne’s.

In conclusion, we can see that the artists are trying their best to show us how they see this world by creating different artwork. It is not shame to draw from the same idea or to get inspiration from other artists, but we have to add our own perspective to create originality for the work.
