My name is Anthony Ray Gamez Jr. My name is derived from Latin. It means priceless, of inestimable worth, and worthy of praise. But I don’t believe my parents named me Anthony because of what it means, they named me Anthony because of the fact that my dad’s name is Anthony. Pi’s full name is Piscine Molitor Patel. His name comes from a pool in France also called the Piscine Molitor. Oddly enough his parents did not care for water but a is inspired by a family friend who was a champion swimmer, often referred to as Pi’s uncle or Mamaji, who recalled his fondest memories of being at this pool.
My nickname AJ stems from my name is the same as my father’s, Anthony. The A is for Anthony and the J is for junior. Before I was born my parents had the nickname AJ in mind so technically speaking my nickname was sort of kinda forced upon me but not in a bad way! Here’s a quick little backstory on where my parents got the great idea for my name. In the late 90’s early 2000’s there was a show on HBO called the “Sopranos” on the show there is a father named Anthony or “Tony” Soprano and his son Anthony Soprano Jr or “AJ” Soprano so my parent thought that was a cool way to easily differentiate my dad and me. Also in the show, they rarely call AJ Anthony which is fairly similar to my situation because my parents RARELY call me Anthony. Pi’s initial nickname doesn’t have as great a backstory as mine but a sort of unfortunate one. Pi’s initial nickname was given to him because his name sounded like a synonym for urinating, and pissing. So in a way, we both have a forced nickname, mine being for the better his being for the worse. But Pi gave himself the nickname of Pi to not be bullied as he did in the past, so this was a non-forced but chosen nickname.
A name can define you in many ways. I feel like a name can define you but you define your name. When you do certain actions or say certain things they are connected to your name so when people think of your name they will of the positive or negative interactions they’ve had with you. When Pi gave himself the nickname “Pi” he was bold about it, when he was talking to his peers he was polite and patient. He was a respectful student and that helped him “define” his name to others.
I don’t know if I would change my name. I see no reason to change it because there’s nothing wrong with it such as a weird spelling or that I’m getting made fun of for. I was talking to my parents recently about what they were going to name me if they didn’t name Anthony. They were going to name me Benjamin or Christopher. I was thinking about how different my life would be if my name was one of the two. It’s crazy how a name can change someone’s life, for example, this essay right now wouldn’t be my name being Anthony it could’ve been about Chris Gamez.
