“Members within the LGBT community experience mental health problems at disproportionate rates compared to the general population” (LGBT Foundation, 2019). This tweet by the LGBT Foundation shows that there are nearly 52% of the LGBT group that experienced depression last year. The percentage of LGBT youth shows that public support does not provide an appropriate response for the teenagers. While the situation of LGBT youth is a significant issue in current society, this mental illness has increased dramatically in the past decade. From a sociological and psychological perspective, the health of LGBT youth is at risk of mental disorders such as suicide and depression through the following causes: institutionalized support in school, social exclusion, fear from family and interpersonal ability.根据body的意思换一个词或者短语

The abbreviation “LGBT” is defined to be lesbian, gay, bisexual, and transgender. Recently, Sweden was named the most friendly country for LGBT groups according to the LGBT Danger Index that was ranked over 150 countries, but the US and Canada left behind. There are approximately eight different factors that may impact these groups, such as the legal status of homosexual marriage, rights in the workplace, anti-discrimination laws, and other laws for LGBT righteousness (Nikel, 2019). In 1977, Quebec became the first province that passed a bill for decriminalizing the homosexual. In 2000, the Canadian Parliament passed Bill-23 which gave the same benefits for the LGBT group to have a common-law relationship. In 2005, the Civil Marriage Act was enacted as a milestone for same-sex couples in which permitted same-sex marriage across Canada (Government of Canada, 2018). Finally, after many years of legal conflicts, the US Supreme Court followed as well (Lopez, 2016).

According to the Merriam-Webster Dictionary (2019), the meaning of mental health is along the lines of the ability to function normally. The prevalence of mental health disorders among LGBT youth has many differences compared to the general population. To be more specific, apart from normal sources of stress, these unique experiences negatively affect the psychological health and overall well-being of LGBT youths. (Besides the daily or other normal stressors, these unique experiences have been damaged mental health as well as the well-being of the LGBT group. The factual information about the suicide rate by Mark Hatzenbuehler, who completed a survey by Oregon Health Teens, shows that there are 21.5% of LGBT youth versus 4.2% with heterosexuals youth. Therefore, it is important to recognize the factors that affect mental health in LGBT group youth (Hatzenbuehler, 2011).

The mental health problems in the LGBT group reveal the increasing percentage of mental discord through insufficient institutionalized support in school. In more detail, LGBT youth lacks an appropriate living climate which limit their rights and protection and leads to a risk of suicide in those living areas. According to Mark L.Hatzenbuehler, an associate professor from Mailman School of Public Health at Columbia University, who has written a research paper in LGBT youth, “School climates that protect sexual minority students may reduce their risk of suicidal thoughts” (Hatzenbuehler, M. L., 2014). This indicates that without support from the school, which lesbian, gay, and bisexual students in a particular living area have reported higher suicidal than students living in a less protected zone. Due to the funding of certain states, their living environment now has an extra layer of protection causing a near elimination of suicidal thoughts by LGBT youths. In addition, according to Joseph Kosciw, who works as a chief Research and Strategy Officer at GLSEN the Gay, Lesbian & Straight Education Network, has written a report of hostile school environment which demonstrates that “the ways in which school-based support--such as supportive staff, anti-bullying and harassment policies, LGBT-inclusive curricular resources, and GSAs--can positively affect LGBT students' school experiences” (Kosciw, J, 2012).
