My philosopher is Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart. He was an Austrian composer. He excelled in every genre of music unlike most of the composers before him.
His father, Leopold, wrote a famous book on violin-playing, which was published the same year of Wolfgang’s birth. Leopold and his wife, Anna Maria Pertl, had seven children and Wolfgang and his sister Maria Anna, who was nicknamed ‘Nannerl’ were the only two to survive. Wolfgang showed high musical talent at a very young age. At the age of four he was playing small pieces and by five he was already composing. Just before he turned six, his father took him and his sister, who was also very talented, to Munich to play in the Bavarian court.
Mozart thought that the definition of justice was that people were to be as they wanted but they would have to pay the consequences of their actions. He worked hard so he didn’t really have to pay any big consequences for anything but other people around him have had to. Mozart was a devout Catholic, but it is a disagreement as to how devout a Catholic he was though. Much dialog shows that near the end of his life, Mozart was a ‘high-ranking Freemason’, which was an organization that would later be at odds with the church, but during his time, Freemasons and Catholics were not as antagonistic against each other. It was also shown that Mozart believed in a ruling government where an elite monarchy and the church ruled the masses, mostly unquestioned, from luxury. Mozart was a regular in the European royal courts in France, Spain, Prussia, Britain, and Austria. However, during the Enlightenment, the thinkers of the time started spreading their ideas of science, democracy, individual freedom, and questioning the legitimacy and authority of the church and monarchy. Mozart believes that men and women should have equal rights. He thinks that all people should have the same opportunities to do things. He believes this because his sister had the same opportunity as him to become famous in music with piano and other instruments. He does not believe in the idea that people should be given rights given on their gender. Wolfgang thinks that the government is a positive good. This is because he believes in a ruling government where an elite monarchy and the church is ruling the masses in luxury. He was part of the luxury because he had visited the royal courts of much of Europe when he was young. He played for the royalty at the time and then was ‘brought’ into the luxurious life. Mozart lived in a family that insisted strictly upon the orders of the church. They would encourage family prayer, fasting, regular attendance at mass, the veneration of saints, and frequent confessions. He lived in a family that was very religious, but as he grew up there was dialog that showed him becoming more of a Freemason than a Catholic. Mozart thought that social class was a bad thing. He showed this in his opera ‘Don Giovanni’. He makes the upper-class people the bad guys while the lower-class people are the good guys/ main characters of the story. This was completely different from what the normal in that society was then. At the time, it was seen that the lower-class was seen as the bad guys and the upper-class was seen as the good guys/ main characters of the story. Mozart completely changed the idea that the upper-class was the good guys all the time. Mozart believed in education although he was homeschooled by his father, Leopold.
I agree with most of the parts of what Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart has said on these topics. The ones that I don’t agree with is relationship between the government and an individual. Although I could not find a definite answer, I could see that he believes that people should believe in their government no matter what because he trusted the government. I believe that an individual should have their own opinion on what they want to trust and not trust. I think that he had the right idea about the other topics such as the rights possessed by the people and the definition of justice, but I did have to disagree with him on a few of his thoughts.
