Three aspects of medieval life can be identified in the illustration from the Grimani Breviary. In medieval times there were more illustrations than writing because many people couldn’t read, this evidence can be supported by the illustration as it is a primary source. In the 14th century, September, when this document was created it gave information about plants and farming to be done. Serfs can be seen working in this scene with a castle an ox and a carriage. Most of the farming work was done by serfs and nobles were forced to pay them to ensure work on farms was done. There is a clear division between the rich and poor, this was common in medieval times to show how one person has power over another.

The information from the graph describes the impact of the Black Death after 1348. When the black death occurred a large amount of the population had died out from different parts of the world and this information can visibly be seen when drawn out. However, after the black death, the population had grown reasonably fast to reach 6.7 billion people, compared to before the black death when the population was moving pretty slowly. When this information is seen on a graph the world population growth throughout history rises much quicker compared to before the black death.

There are many reasons why historians may disagree about the number of people who died because of the Black Death. Many sources present data about the number of deaths caused by the Black Death, however, these sources may not be reliable because of one reason. Although there may be many graphs that show the world population during the time of the black death it also shows everything else happening in the world. There may have been another life-threatening event happening at the same time but compared to the black death it didn’t have a huge impact on the world population. The main problem with these sources and graphs is that it is not only showing the world population throughout the black death.

Compared to European populations, there are reasons why there is much less information about the effect on Asian and African populations because of the Black Death.

Primary sources, such as text, might contain useful information for Historians to better understand the Black Death. Matteo Villani who lived in Florence, Italy, describes what life was like during the plague. This text is a primary source as it was written by someone alive who experienced what it was like during and after the Black Death. This text talks about how men wanted the best luxury commodities and how all the prices went up after the Black Death by as much as double the price.

Henry Knighton’s writings in his book, History of England from the 14th century, has described the Black Death and its immediate effects. This book talks about the peasants and how their role is important as the workmen. Without the peasants sheep and cattle went wandering and crops would perish in the fields. Peasants were so obstinate they were not going to listen to the king’s command, he could either lose his fruit and crops or satisfy the wishes of the workmen. After the pestilence, buildings fell into ruins for lack of inhabitants, many villages became desolate and it was probable that such places would never be inhabited. Henry Knighton describes the immediate effects of how the Black Death as a change in the amount of power peasants had.

A graph showing daily wages can be both useful and limited in ways that can help historians understand how peasants became more powerful in society after the Black Death. The huge death toll meant a smaller workforce and this affected the change in the amount of power peasants had. The graph showing the wages per day for a laborer is useful because it shows the year and how many pennies are paid. This graph shows how much wages in England had grown just 11 years after the Black Death first occurred, the information can limit our understanding because it only shows the years 1300 and 1361, without knowing what happened between those years we can’t compare and could easily jump to conclusions.

To understand and learn about the Black Death it is important to use many sources. Henry Knighton lived through the Black Death and was able to describe the immediate effects. This source was useful in learning about the Black Death because it is a primary source that talks about a certain group of people, the peasants.
