The Knotted Gun is a sculpture placed outside the United Nation Building, in New York City. It is created by an artist named Carl Fredrik Reutersward in 1988. Nowadays, there are more than 30 copies of this sculpture placing all around the world. The theme of this sculpture is about voicing social injustice.

Obviously, this sculpture has becoming more popular as the number of the copies of this sculpture are increasing and exist in many cities. Even though they are built in specific places but other than the citizens, many of tourists or foreigners will also go to those places as one of their locations in their trip to visit the sculpture. Due to the popularity of this sculpture, the citizens, tourists and foreigners, or even those online visitors are all the audiences of this sculpture. However, the target audiences are actually those ‘killers’ or assailants that intent to create chaos and cruel shooting incidents. These people are cold-hearted and no compassion for human life. For instance, as everyone knows that a terrorist organization which known as the Islamic State (IS). This group of people just does whatever they want in order to achieve their targets especially something that we couldn’t expect on it. Mass shooting, bombing, war crimes, sexual violence, and even kidnapped children and train them to become child soldiers and in the end sacrificed them in bombing attacks are what they had done. Other than that, some open-minded countries allow their citizens to have their own guns for example the United States. Originally, this action is to ensure civilian safety. However, now it is used by the people to commit sickening crimes and thus caused many of innocent deaths. There are many incidents that happened at the United States for example robbery, domestic violence, homicide, and even mass shootings which caused many innocent people to die. These cases are all known as abuses of human rights. As a human, everyone has their rights to live their own life. Living in a peaceful world is the dream of each of us rather than living in the places which is full of fears and worries. As guns don’t kill people, but human do, the knotted-gun sculpture has expressed the meaning of peace and encourage gun crime prevention. It is a symbol of non-violence which means to avoid all the violence actions and pray for peace but not victory. The sculpture should be significant in the public especially to those target audience. This sculpture has a direct and obvious meaning to educate people to stop the war and gun violence. It also reminded people about the severity of guns violence and do not abuse the weapons. Once it is misused, your future life will be tied forever just like the knotted-gun. People should realize that how important the peaceful world is, and we should appreciate our life which gave by God.

The Knotted Gun is a sculpture that the gun barrel is tied and it is bronze. Based on my understanding of this sculpture, it is created as a remembrance tribute to an artist, John Lennon who was killed innocently outside his house. He was a singer, songwriter and a peace activist. Although this sculpture looks simple, it contains a lot of deep meanings behind. The word ‘knot’ actually has the same pronounce as ‘not’, which is clearly indicate non-violence and anti-war. The part of the gun barrel is knotted in order to lock the gun and prevent it to fire. Furthermore, the gun barrel is pointing upwards instead of pointing to the front just like the real gun. This indirectly brought out the meaning of don’t misuse the gun to point at those innocent people anymore. It inspired and motivated people to resolve conflict in a peaceful way. Human should know how to manage the conflict and their emotional intelligence in a right way. Social justice means human should be treated equally and fairly. This sculpture has exactly fit the theme of voicing social injustice as it expresses its opposition to the unfair society and trying to alternate and encourage people towards justice. It is also a symbol that help those innocent people to express their fears toward a violent society. I think that the main reason why it placed at the public is to remind us the severity of current violent actions as well as to stop us from doing those bad actions.

Overall, this sculpture owns a lot of meaning, not only as a remembrance tribute to John Lennon but also a symbol of non-violence. It has great significance for this society as it reminds us all the time to respect each other and avoid violent behavior. It has taught me to treat people in a proper way rather than being cold-hearted with no compassion. The moment when I saw the picture of this sculpture, it gave me the impression of justice and peace. At the moment, I realize that violence has become more and more serious in this society. However, no one dares to raise their voice rather they just bear in silent. Every time I saw those news report about the gun violence that killed many of innocent people, I was very angry and felt sorry for them. This is the reason why I will choose this sculpture when I first saw it. It brings a lot of meaning to me and all of us. Sometimes it will let me to imagine if my family member is one of the victims, how hard will it be for me or people around us to accept it. As life is so precious, we should appreciate each of everyone’s existence rather than hurting each other. Weapons don’t fire on their own, it is controlled by human. Thus, from now on we should stop and avoid those violent actions in order to save our loves one.
