The importance of music in the life of humans and their surrounding is huge. There are many myths about music in public spaces relating to the impact it has. Every person has their own taste in music and which creates a unique relationship in their lives as well. We all know music is and will be the most essential part of people’s life. It even beats literature or newspapers in daily routine. Wherever we go nowadays, we see a pop culture which brings us the attention towards it as it can be influential sometimes as it needs to compete to gain our time and attention. Music is the tool or language which can be used to connect emotionally to the people we are surrounded by and the place which makes us stay longer at that particular place.
Public space can mean many different types of open areas. As per the definition or the topic we can say that space means natural and cultural resources like land which is unused or recreation areas. In modern cities, there are many benefits of having music at such places as it attracts people to such luxurious feels. But it also depends upon the quality of sound used as it is a key part of the development. However, sometimes the sound quality is not that satisfactory because it is difficult for managing the needs of people as it totally relies upon human behavior. Individual behaviors refer to the person’s actions as per some certain situation, it rarely has an effect upon the surroundings whereas crowd behavior depends on the behavior of the crowd subject to the effect of the environment. The sound environment can also affect human perception and it also can influence crowd behavior. There are many studies carried out and concluded that music affects the pace of shopping done by people and the amount of time spent in malls by the crowd. It also influences the eating and talking duration of some people in public spaces. Studies have shown that musical sound can fluctuate their emotions and which can relatively change their behavior.
The famous public spaces music is like concerts which involve piano and singers where people with the same interests are found all together in one place. Program music makes the effect with its pictorial presentations. Even with the industrial revolution, there is a great development in musical instruments for better enhancement of musical sound. Pianos have acquired new keys for better louder dynamics, and Violins have developed new chin rest to develop more power. Trumpets and horns have also developed new mechanisms. All these changes are just to make the experience of music in public spaces stronger and more influential in a positive way.
Also, playing music and kind of music hampers the ethics too as it depends on multiple occasions. There is also the idea that it is unethical to play music in public according to the culture we live in as we are surrounded by different age groups. The fact is different people like a different kinds of music. This is something that everyone accepts and then also we choose to avoid in daily life routine. Then there is the dilemma that pop music is loved by everyone and therefore it is acceptable but that isn’t true. Even if the music is popular it is not loved by everyone as not everyone enjoys it.
If you ever listened to Merzbow, its music is too loud and noisy but still enjoyed by many people though it's uncomfortable. Many people have also declared distaste of pop music but still it is acceptable in many places. In a nutshell, music is a lot more than just background music that touches all of our senses. Music in public spaces is not a new thing; it has been an essential part since ancient times. Music also depends upon the place you belong and it comes with inspiration. Music is a temporary art that a receiver experiences. It has the power to convey emotion directly but the feeling depends on the depth of the receiver. Which, sense of comfort is the first attribute that indicates people’s perception quality of space. The second attribute is a sense of sociability and community. Music depends on how welcome you feel in the square which defines comfort and choice.
