Introduction

The human body is made up of about 78 organs, 5 of which are considered vital for survival - they all work together to keep a stable internal environment. Many externals factory’s influence how the body reacts and changes to keep this internal peace; simple things like a decrease in temperature can cause muscles to shiver and blood vessels to contract to help maintain the optimal conditions for the bodily functions. In this experiment the heart rate of a participant was measured with and without the influence of an energy drink ( Powerade ) during different exercise times. Previous research on this topic goes to say that energy drinks increase blood sugar levels and heart rate after just 10 minutes after consumption, also many articles repeatedly mention that energy drink appear to have fast variety of side affects; both intended and not. The aim of this experiment is to find the increase in heart rate as the exercise time extends as well as the impact an energy drink has on the heart rate.

Variables

- Independent: exercise times

- Dependent: heart rate following exercise

- Controlled: exercise, exercise times, pulse location, drink consumption

Hypothesis: In all exercise the participants heart rate will increase by a minimum of 10 beats per minute and the consumption of Powerade will boost this effect, because the heart needs to pump more blood throughout the body meaning it needs to pump faster and the consumption of Powerade will increase the heart rate as it’s supposed to give more energy thus it should increase in heart speed.

Research question: Does the consumption of an energy drink effect the heart rate following exercise, compared to exercise without the drink?

Rationale: The research

Theory: Homeostasis is a combination of Greek homeo, meaning equal, and stasis, meaning standing; ultimately, homeostasis refers to the body maintaining stable internal conditions. Through the use of feedback loops, both positive and negative, the body continually remains at a stable conditions. Thermoregulation, cardiovascular and respiratory systems are all part of this continual process.

Changes how and why:

This experiment has been modified in many ways compared to the originally basic experiment given. First, there are two test being compared where as in the given one only one test is done. This has been done so to compare the effects an energy drink has on a persons’ heart rate after exercise. A second modification was removing the 45 second exercise time. This was done to increase efficiency and same time when completing these experiments. As there was limited time it was best to only do the three trials, which game the required information. A third modification was adding the Powerade to one test. This was done to experiment the actual effect an energy drink has on a persons heart rate. The exercise stayed the same, so that previous information could be applied to this experiment. Times excluding the 45 second, also stayed the same as previous experiments.

Risks of this assessment include:

- Any heart issues being escalated due to exercise/ drink consumption

- Allergies/illness with drink

- Breathing issues, again to do with exercise/ drink consumption

- Exercise injury

Analysis of table results: within the results it was found that a few heart rates were the same and majority of the test have a heat rate increase, other then these details the heart rate fluctuated considerably in this experiment. The data was displayed in multiple ways for many reasons. The table was best used to collect raw data, and the bar graph clearly shows a side by side comparison of the findings, and the line graph was good to show the increase and decrease comparison between the two sets of information which is why it is included above.

Discussion: The results of this experiment, shoes that Powerade did not increase the heart rate measured but instead did the opposite; this was an unexpected result compared to the hypothesis. In the hypothesis it was predicted that all exercises would increase heart rate by minimum 10 beats and the Powerade would boost this effect. This was disproved buy the results as majority of the averages in the test without Powerade were actually high than those with Powerade. This could be an accurate assessment of what happens when drinking energy drinks. Alternatively this could be the result of external influences and factors which could of have swayed the outcome of the experiment. Another reason for the verdict could be the type of energy drink and consumption over time all. There are countless possibilities for this to be the result. There were many weaknesses with the method and complications throughout the investigation. One of the issues is that information collected isn’t as accurate as possible, the method in which the heart rate was measured was limiting how factual the results. Time management was also an issues, as with restricted time, efforts were put in to move quickly through each trial, this rush could enviably lead to miscalculations and incidents. Other issues included limitations with resources and a build up of Powerade within the participant system. All these factors could influence the end result, for future tests it would improve overall accuracy to have a more efficient way of measuring heart rate and, if given longer time to complete the experiment. In conclusion it was found that the consumption of Powerade did in fact effect the participants heart rate but not in the way predicted. The reason behind this result is unknown and further tests and research would have to be completed to find the answer.
