Music has been a major impact on some of our lives since the beginning, there are all kinds of songs and music based on your preference. When we are happy, we listen to music, as and when we are sad. Most importantly, every song has a message; it tells a story of someone's pain and suffering or even an event that occurred. Research has shown that music has the power to improve our health, such as improving your mood, reduces stress, and much more. Native Americans have used music to boost ancient healing practices for hundreds of years. Chinese medicine used music for healing, the melodic modes of the ancient ragas used in the musical style in India also usually created completely different states of mind for healing.

One song that I particularly want to address about is ‘Eye of the Tiger’. It was very popular in American pop culture when it was used in the lyrics of a song by the band named Survivor in 1982. The song itself was the theme song for the new movie ‘Rocky III’, which came out in the early 80s. The film depicted the continuing struggle of an aging boxer Rocky Balboa to remain focused as he stands up to face another opponent. In his mind, the contest had become a win-or-you die situation, and, if victorious, Rocky would be the last survivor first watching, then stalking and then defeating his prey. His face becomes fixed with the ‘Eye of the Tiger’ a show no fear, no pain, look of determination as he trains for the fight of his life. The metaphor was perfect for dramatic purposes, especially during the struggles of 80’s excess, and the problem between the US and the Soviet Union. Rocky fights as an American in ‘Rocky III’, but two years later fights as a Russian boxer, Ivan Drago, in ‘Rocky IV’. The symbolism was anything, but subtle, ‘Eye of the Tiger’ is not an inaccurate description of the look on a tiger’s face when he is intensely pinned on a target - his pupils get larger to absorb all light, his ears go back against his head, and he tightens and compacts his body into a tough, aerodynamic ball. He's prepared to do some damage to an unlucky foe, and it is unlikely that he will fail. The words are meant to give hope and inspire confidence, the song is a motivational anthem.

One thing that caught my eye was an ad which also happened to use ‘Eye of the Tiger’ song , the ad shows the benefits of Nolan's cheese in a journey of a mouse finding a piece of cheese on a mouse trap. John Nolan is the director of the ad; he shows how the cheese helps a poor mouse through his struggles and to overcome great obstacles. This is an exaggeration of the health benefits of the cheese, but the ad is certainly effective in showing the power of the cheese through use of his subtle rhetoric devices. One big reason is the fact that the targeted audience is very vague. It leaves the doors open for anyone to relate because it has a comedy side to it. However, there is also a more specific targeted audience. This audience is indeed animal lovers. An animal lover watching this ad already has a positive connection to the mouse because they love all animals and don’t want to see one suffer. Whoever or whatever helps the mouse go through the tough time is sure to gain the respect of that particular audience, and Nolan know this very well. The advertisement shows a hopeful mouse searching for something to fill his stomach when he comes upon a mouse trap with a piece of Nolan’s cheese on it. The mouse starts eating and feeling quite satisfied when the mouse trap suddenly springs off and he gets trapped under the bar. He sulks a while but somewhere the mouse finds the strength to overcome his situation and bench presses the bar off of him. The strength, of course, comes from the cheese the mouse was dining on. The rhetoric devices that Nolan uses are what enables him to bring out emotions in his audience of animal lovers. The emotions that are brought out make the audience connect to the ad and thus connect to the product itself. More specifically Nolan uses the power of background music, appeal to pathos, and lighting.

There was a patient named Henry, he never spoke, he was quite all the time. The doctors found out from Henry's daughter that Henry always loved music, one day they gave him an iPod with his favorite songs on it. They started playing his favorite songs. The doctors were shocked because Henry always had his head down and never talked to no one, I mean, not even his daughter. So basically, music seems to assist such symptoms as pain, fatigue, and depression over the future. But there are different clinical trials have discovered a discount in vital signs, force per unit area, respiration rate, insomnia, depression, and anxiety with music medical aid. Nobody is aware of all the ways in which music will profit the body.

As I addressed in the beginning of my essay, listening to music can tell a story or the song you can relate to you by hearing different lyrics, after listening to a song multiple times you can eventually catch that I can relate to this song. Song that we hear, can come in different styles such as visual, by visual I mean video songs. What makes it interesting for people are some tricks that the producers or directors use, for example camera shots, angles or even celebrities, but the most important is the coloring for the music video. Since I’m addressing about a song, let me talk about a song named ‘Happy’ by Pharrell Williams. This song is more than just an interesting melody, it shows a lot of symbolism of human spirit and culture pride. The video was made for people to see the hard life of people in Ukraine in the year 2014. In the video people are shown dancing in the streets, they are all smiling and dancing in joy.

When you hear music, our feelings can change by the mood of the song that is playing, such as it could have an emotional and visual factor. When we hear a song, we know what the song means, but it could have an opposite meaning such as the song name ‘Eye of the Tiger’. I thought this song was just like the other song I hear, a couple of friends having fun and making music in their garage. What I really think, this video means is a group of friends that can afford a big stage and good instruments. They come from work, they meet in the middle and they walk to their place, where they practice music every day. As we see in the beginning of the song, there is a place where everything is messed up, the environment is not good, but they still happy and enjoy time with their group. They practice their music hoping that they will be successful one day. The true meaning of this song is ‘never giving up’, no matter how hard life becomes, you keep fighting.

As we can see that we may not think about rhetoric, but we indeed use it in our daily lives, we definitely see it on a daily basis. Rhetoric is something that people should be sympathetic to, because it is a way to get something. We may not be aware when we are being exposed to rhetoric, but advertisers work hard to target every type of people taste because there is something for everyone.

Now when I am exposed to rhetoric, I will know instantly, because I learned a lot from my research and the assignments, we did in class together. From this research we can take a lot from music. I learn about so many things such as the song ‘Eye of the Tiger’. As we discussed before the songs have very deep meanings. Music could have a message hidden, someone sing about their life, their problems. I also went over how music is used in advertisements, making the ad have a great song point for the audience. Music also helps heal people; it has been proven that music has the power to heal.
