Not too long ago the idea of genetic enhancement of babies was something of science fiction. However, we have come to realize that this medical procedure is no longer fiction and is very close to becoming a reality. As experts begin to acknowledge this as an alternative, whether for medical or superficial reasons, they are considering the safety concerns involved in the process of gene modification. This medical process is still in the nascent experimental stage and it needs time before it can officially be used on a large scale. Genetics is not error free, which means that it is very likely that mistakes will happen along the way.

Many researchers have promised to minimize illnesses or any complications that come with this medical procedure as much as they can. However, it is possible that new form illnesses that they are not aware of may arise and this is can very detrimental to the baby. Scientists use in-vitro-fertilization, which is a process whereby a baby’s DNA is edited outside the womb and placed back into the womb. The procedure is not completely safe as there are dozens of complications that can arise in the process of gene editing. The process involves the use of genes from random places in our genes and are inserted into the “genome”. The main concern of several scientists is that this could lead to the distraction of other genomes in the body of the baby and furthermore affect the efficiency of the genome or even the survival of the embryo. During this process scientist delete or mute genes, and this could affect other activities that are carried out by that gene that are crucial to the makeup of the DNA. It’s not always that scientists know the effect a single gene has, therefore this could possibly lead to unexpected or unwanted changes in the DNA of the baby. Conversely, many traits we have are affected by more than just one gene, and we sometimes do not know all the gene is responsible for a certain trait or attribute. Because so many genes are involved, it can be complicated to erase or add a certain trait.

Experts still have a long way to go before they can full understand how the human genome is intertwined.” Health risks are not the only concerns when it comes to designer babies. When modifying chromosomes, some of the altered chromosomes can be negatively affected. By altering chromosomes for specific traits, certain traits can take altering of many chromosomes. For example, when altering for a specific height, it takes around 50 chromosomes” - (Johnson Agar, Nicholas. American Institute of Biological Sciences. “Designer Babies: Ethical)

As a result of altercation of the gene designer babies will have lower immunity level. This will have a domino effect on the society because newly introduced viruses or bacteria’s will be affecting us. This will negatively affect so many people who do not have immunity to the illness because their genes ae altered. When modifying genes there is a great chance for many unusual complications. The biggest concern for parents who decide to create a designer baby is that they may not necessarily receive the baby they wanted; the desired traits may be completely different.
