ABSTRACT

This report is concerned with the aim to measure the properties of the drilling mud (hydrogen ion concentration). The term pH is a logarithmic scale used to specify the acidity or alkalinity (concentration of hydrogen ions) in an aqueous solution (drilling mud in this case). In general, to proceed with this experiment, a range of equipment were used such as pH paper, pH meter. All these materials were utilized in order to know the explanations why the mud varies and to grasp with exactitude the variousproperties that the fluids have. In this experiment, two samples were used. Sample A consists of 20g of bentonite mixed with 350 ml of water while sample B consists of sample A and 5g of KCl.

This detailed report consists of seven chapters. Chapter 1 gives a brief introduction into the topic of this experiment. Chapter 2 shows the various apparatus used over the course of this experiment. Chapter 3 explains the procedures. In chapter 4, the results of the experiment is shown then explained in chapter 5. Conclusions and recommendations are detailed in chapter 6 while the references are listed in chapter 7.

INTRODUCTION

The pH value is an important value to consider when considering drilling fluids. PH is a value that shows the hydrogen ion concentration in liquid. We use it to show acidity or alkalinity of drilling mud particularly water base mud. The pH is presented in a numerical value (0-14). The pH formula is listed below; pH = -log10[H] Where: H is the hydrogen ion concentration in mol. According to the pH formula, the more hydrogen atoms present, the more acidity of substance is but the pH valve decreases. Generally speaking, the pH of 7 means neutral. Fluids with a pH above 7 are considered as alkaline. On other hand, the fluids with pH below 7 are defined as acidic. Drilling fluid additives were developed to be mixed with water with a pH level from 8.5 to 10 in order for the required chemical reaction to occur and to provide a proper yield. Most water sources range from 5.5 to 7.5 which is too low. If you find that the pH level is lower than 7, you will need to add soda ash to the water. Soda ash or another product such as pH 10.

DISCUSSSION

From the experiment conducted, the PH meter(electrometric method) gives a more accurate value for PH in the solutions. The Ph values of sample A indicate that the sample is quite alkaline in nature as its values fall above 7-the neutral point. In the case of sample B which is the sample A plus Potassium Chloride (KCL) we can see a reduction in the PH value as KCL is a neutral salt which tends to neutralise the solution bringing it closer to 7 hence a reduction in the PH value from 10.2 to 8.6.

CONCLUSIONS

Measurement off drilling fluid properties is very necessary. The knowledge of measurement should be known in order to provide accurate measurement data. For instance, hydrogen ion concentration should be well known in order achieve the right viscosity value and end up saving you money in the long run.
