Did u ever read a classic book or seen a classic movie/television, well, the Great Gatsby is a classic book written by one of the greatest writers in American literature F. Scott Fitzgerald. This classic was written almost one hundred years ago, and people still classify this book as The Great American Novel. The Great Gatsby is the ultimate rags-to-riches story. This story represents the jazz age in the 1920 and the American dream. Something rich, poor, and middle-class people can relate to. This novel represents people in this culture who think money will bring them happiness, but does money really bring people happiness and love? Or does it divide us and ruin us? Something Jay Gatsby never seemed to figure out, before it was too late.
The Great Gatsby was written in the 1920s where it is located on Long island. When Fitzgerald first published the book he did not know the work he needed to would be famous when he died. One of the greatest novels in America is a story about a man named Jay Gatsby who thought he could be in the rich class, but it all ends in a tragedy with him another character. Nick carraway, our narrator, shows us Gatsby's reality. Gatsby (the main character) is a man who can let go of his past and is trying to reconnect with his lover Daisy. Daisy Buchanan is a careless, rich wife, who only cares about money and doesn’t show loyalty. The reason why Gatsby tries to get Daisy is that he believes that if he gets her he will be accepted in the rich class. He tries to impress her by showing her the clothes, his house, and his money, but it doesn’t work. Gatsby finally thinks he has everything and will finally be accepted into her world, but is betrayed. As he tried to tell Tom Buchanan that she never loved him and that she is leaving him, Daisy is weak and goes against gatsby. She lets him down and lets his fall, and makes a fool of himself. As Gatsby and Daisy drive home Myrtle,( Tom's mistress) runs into the street thinking that it's Toms's, but daisy runs over instantly killing her. Tom tries to comfort George Wilson ( Myrtle's husband) and tells him that it was all on gatsby and which has him killed in the end. This painful story has reached the status of a classic not just for the pathos of the love story but for its lasting themes. Gatsby tries to make everything back to normal with his money, but it doesn’t work. This captures the paradoxical relationship many Americans have with our history. We long to create ourselves anew, shedding the circumstances of our birth, but are enamored of a vision of personal perfection that is rooted in a vision of money. We do not grasp that we can’t have it both ways.
Although, we never truly find out about Gatsby's past. We do know one thing that is for certain, he was always a determined kid, always know his passion in life, and always went for his dream (Fitzgerlad 1.6). Fitzgerald gives us a better look at Gatsby's determination. Gatsby was born to poor farmer parents in North Dakota,” I suppose he'd had the name ready for a long time, even then. His parents were shiftless and unsuccessful farm people – his imagination had never really -accepted them as his parents at all. (4.7)but at 17”. Determined to become rich, he worked for wealthy Dan Cody and never looked back. He was able to inherit parts of Cody’s fortune, he used what he learned of wealthy society to first charm Daisy before shipping out to WWI. Then after returning home, he realized Daisy was married and gone. He set out to earn enough money to win Daisy over, turning to crime via a partnership with Meyer Wolfsheim to quickly amass wealth.
Meeting Daisy for the first time in five years. Nick gives us a deeper inside into Gatsby's comfortable side as they all meet up in Nick's house for tea, “He had passed visibly through two states and was entering upon a third. After his embarrassment and his unreasoning joy, he was consumed with wonder at her presence. He had been full of the idea so long, dreamed it right through to the end, and waited with his teeth set, so to speak, at an inconceivable pitch of intensity. Now, in the reaction, he was running down like an overwound clock. (5.114). The dream Gatsby has been working towards for years – to meet and impress Daisy with his fabulous wealth finally begins to come to fruition. And so, for the first time, we see Gatsby’s genuine emotions, rather than his carefully-constructed persona. Nick finds these emotions almost as beautiful and transformative as Gatsby’s smile, though there’s also the sense that this love could quickly veer off the rails: Gatsby is running down “like an overwound clock.” In that sense, this moment gently foreshadows the escalating tensions that lead to the novel's tragic climax. And the dream dying.
However, In the book, Gatsby doesn't realize that money can't bring you happiness. He thinks that if he has the money not only will he be happy and get Daisy, but also he will be accepted into the rich class, and forget about his past, you can tell throughout the book gatsby is ashamed of his past and does not ever want to go back to it.
Towards the end of the book everyone's true colors come out, after gatsby's death nick tries to have people,(the same people who went to his parties) come to this man's funeral, but nobody comes to honor gatsby, not even daisy .“Nobody came.” (9.7). It just goes to show you that no one truly cares about you until they need you and to always watch out for wolves in sheep's clothing.
While this novel is well-known and loved by many people, some do not see its greatness. For some people, this is just like any other love story that ends tragically. For some readers, the complex ideas of wealth and social status are deterred because of the romantic element of the book. For example, Anne O’Neill, a journalist for the Irish Times admired Gatsby because it “appealed to [her] schoolgirl soul because of the romantic story at its heart…”(qt in O’Neill). These readers do not see the real meaning behind The Great Gatsby, Fitzgerald sends messages throughout the story, but the biggest one is money can't bring you happiness. It’s more than just a tragic love story. It's a timeless classic.
The Great Gatsby is more than a love story and tragedy. It's a classic that everyone can relate to, even though it's an old book. Also, it tells us that money can't bring you happiness and love. Gatsby never realized that money does not bring you satisfaction, but Fitzgerald helps us realize this in the book, and that's why we read it today. A quote from Thomas Parke D'Invilliers is
“Then wear the gold hat, if that will move her; If you can bounce high, bounce for her too, Till she cries 'Lover, gold-hatted, high-bouncing lover, I must have you!'. This tells us that even if try to impress someone it might work out in the end.
