Modern American society is deemed safe for many. With current laws in place, at first glance it seems there is not much to fear. The United States is known world-wide to be the freedom country. However, it may not necessarily be the case. This safety presented before American’s is often a delusion and the freedom America is known for is a fallacy.

There is a recurring pattern seen today, in a contemporary society, they offer a so-called safety which is costing them their freedom. With every new regulation set forth the people are promised safety. After all, won’t more rules make a better society? As laws become stricter people’s freedom declines, they are no longer free to as many possibilities. Their potential is slowed down because of the amount of laws set in place. People can not live as they please in peace. Civilians will always find a way around the laws that are in place and make a dangerous environment for the people around them. Instead of following the regulations and rules they rebel against them causing more to be set. Laws that are set to “protect” the people restrict them from their freedom. If America continues in the direction it is going the laws and rules will continue to decrease the people’s opportunities and potential to broaden their lives.

Now this trade off may be worth it after all, the safety of people’s families should be a priority. Unfortunately, this does not seem to be the case. The appropriate use of guns in the United States is essentially harmless. Once these weapons are in the wrong hands that is when problems start to arise. According to CNN here has been a total of 46 school shootings in 46 weeks of last year. Parents send their children to school thinking it is secure and their child will come home safe and sound. Never would they have imagined to receive a call home saying their precious child is in danger because there is an active shooter on campus. Yes people have the freedom to own guns but it is putting others at risk. Someone receives the freedom and privilege to own a gun past the age of 21, but because there are unstable people in the world and because the government does not make stricter regulations about who receives access to guns, the safety of many people is at risk. They should be doing more to make sure theses guns are not sold into the wrong hands.

The First Amendment states “Congress shall make no law respecting an establishment of religion, or prohibiting the free exercise thereof; or abridging the freedom of speech…” Americans have the right to speak what they want, when they want. But the world and the people in it have become remarkably corrupt that if someone says something they disagree with they potentially can put their safety at risk. There are many different opinions on many different controversial topics, some may be more passionate about their opinions than others. For instance, someone may not feel comfortable to express their political stand because it may not follow the opinion of others around them. There has been situations where Trump supporters injured or threatened to hurt those who disagreed with the decisions he is making for the country.

The world is divided to the point where freedom and safety can not coexist together. H.L.Mencken, an American essayist and social critic, once wrote “The average man does not want to be free. He simply wants to be safe.”
