In this essay, I am going to describe the five most famous historical places of Pompeii. Some of them have been preserved in perfect condition, while others have been damaged over the years. These are the places that the ancient inhabitants of Pompeii visited every day, watching a gladiator fight, going to the bath or walking around the city. Almost 2,000 years ago, these places were owned and cared for by the ancient inhabitants of Pompeii.

The first place is the Amphitheatre of Pompeii. It was an arena where gladiators fought. These games were so popular that people from surrounding cities came to watch the games. The stands could hold up to 20000 people in them, allowing many people to watch. The builder of the amphitheater was private funds of Gaius Quinctius Valgus and Marcus Porcius (a relative of Julius Caesar's rival). This was one of the most popular forms of entertainment in Pompeii at this time. This relates to entertainment today because people watch sporting matches in similar shaped arenas, the people of Pompeii had their favorite gladiator and our generation has their favorite sport players. Also, people from surrounding cities come to watch the games as well as what people in ancient Rome use to do. The Amphitheatre of Pompeii was a very significant structure that was important in everyone's life supporting people they looked up on playing in the arena.

The second place is the House of Citharist. It was named after the statue of Apollo Citharist. The House of Citharist is a badly damaged residential house along two major Pompeii’s streets, Via dell’Abbondanza and Via Stabiana. The builder of the house in unknown but he was a very good designer and builder because he formed one of the largest houses in Pompeii. It was one of the biggest houses in Pompeii covering an area of 2700 m2. Because of its size, it would be one of the most expensive houses. This tells us that people from the upper classes lived there because of the price of the house. It has several conjoined houses with 3 different entrenched. Like many rich houses, the House of Citharist was originally built as a private house for one group of people, but over the years people built the neighboring houses and made the decision to conjoin the houses together to form one big shared mansion. Because of all the rooms in the house many people shared the economy and lived together. The house has been kept it terrible condition over the years and now is very badly damaged. This is because not that many years ago the house was dug up for research. The first floor of the house is unrecognizable and brutally damaged. It is a shame that most of the house was destroyed but it is still a famous tourist attraction and people still visit to this day.

The third place is the Pompeii's thermal baths. Unlike the amphitheater these baths only were for wealthier people. These baths were very popular through every season because of its different functions. They had a changing room, cold bath room, tepid bath room and hot bath room. The building was divided into two sections, one was reserved for men, and the other was reserved for women. Each of the rooms contained identical function so each room would be the same. Have two sections provide privacy for everyone visiting the bath house. These bath houses were either a social of private activity depending on what type of person you were. The reason why these baths were only for upper class people is because baths were a special occasion for treating yourself, and they thought that the poor did not deserve the facilities that the wealthy had. The baths were always warm, this is because they ran heated water through the walls to create a heater. This relaxing place attracted many people to visit a day. Over the years the Pompeii's bath house has been kept in immaculate condition. This is because it was treated very well over the years, and needed to stay clean for hygiene reasons for the people of Pompeii visiting the baths. The Pompeii's bath house was one of the most relaxing and calming places in Pompeii and kept in excellent condition over the years.

The fourth place is the Temple of Apollo. This was a place where people worshiped their god. The temple had 48 columns, long flights of stairs and an altar to the gods in the middle of the temple. The altar was surrounded by two statues depicting ‘Apollo Shooting Arrows’ and ‘Diana’. The temple was placed in a popular place in Pompeii and had many people of Pompeii each day coming to worship. The Temple of Apollo has been kept in really good condition over the years. Only a few columns have fallen down due to storms and human damage, and the rest of the temple is in immaculate condition. The Temple of Apollo is an amazing structure that has been well looked after throughout the years.

The fifth and last place is Via Stabiana street. This was a popular street in Pompeii. It is 4.5 meters wide and 3.5 center meters deep in the ground. It has been surfaced with a mixture of broken terracotta and fat lime cement, most has been worn away over the years due to millions of visitors walking along it and carts travelling through the streets. People would travel on this street by walking and by cart to get to different places every day. Because this was one of the main streets it would tend to be quite busy due to people needing to go to different places. This street split off too many different directions and bring you to different destinations. The street tends to flood when it rains, they fixed this problem by putting 20 cm high slabs on the pavement, to elevate you off the ground and keep your feet dry and clean. The slabs were placed in a way in which cart could still travel down it without being stopped. The streets normally filled with water due to a lake sewer network and poor flood control. This street was not flat at all compared to pavements nowadays, all the blocks and slabs were different sizes, width and height. This uneven street caused injuries walking and bumpy cart trips. Ancient inhabitants of Pompeii and tourists walked along this street.

In conclusion, Pompeii was filled with many tourist attractions that has convinced people to come and visit the beautiful city of Pompeii. These five sites are just a chunk of what the city has to offer and has many other historic sites that are equally and amazing. These were the places that were part of the daily life of the ancient inhabitants of Pompeii. Pompeii is a beautiful city that has been well looked after throughout the years.
