“We must not be surprised when we hear of murders, killings, wars, or hatred...If a mother can kill her own child, what is left but for us to kill each other?”- Mother Teresa

“The termination of pregnancy by the removal or expulsion from the uterus of a fetus or embryo prior to being capable of normal growth”. Abortion is one of the most controversial and polarising topics today. It is a painful and sensitive topic for women and men who find themselves facing the moral dilemma of whether or not to terminate a pregnancy.

My argument against abortion will establish that abortion is wrong for the same reason as killing a reader of this essay is wrong. Upon fertilization, a human individual is created with a unique genetic identity that remains unchanged throughout his or her life. This individual has a fundamental right to life, which must be protected. The human nature of the human being from conception to old age is not a metaphysical contention, it is plain experimental evidence. A woman's right to use her own body does not entail her right to end someone else's life in order to do what she wants with her body. It is degrading to women that we should treat our children as property to be disposed of as we see fit. So often, abortion provides a way of side-stepping other real issues that should be addressed. There are women who are raped and become pregnant; the problem is that they were raped, not that they are pregnant. There are women who are starving who become pregnant; the problem is that they are starving, not that they are pregnant. There are women in abusive relationships who become pregnant; the problem is that they are in abusive relationships, not that they are pregnant.

Abortion is the killing of a human being, which defies the word of God. The Sixth Commandment of the Bible's Old Testament, 'Thou shalt not kill (Exodus 20:13), applies to all human beings, including unborn babies. Those who deny that fetuses have a right to life do not value all human life but instead select arbitrary characteristics (such as particular levels of physical or psychological development) as giving some human beings more value or rights than others. The most dangerous thing here is the suggestion that human beings have the subjective capacity to define as life that they wish to preserve. Individuals get to define a human life based on their own emotional state.

There is universal agreement that pain is detected by the fetus in the first trimester. If the fetus is beyond 20 weeks of gestation, it is assumed that there will be pain caused to the fetus. It will be severe and excruciating pain and we see [in an ultrasound image] the child's mouth open in a silent scream. This is the silent scream of a child threatened imminently with extinction. Another study published in the Scandinavian Journal of Public Health found that young adult women who undergo abortion may be at increased risk for subsequent depression. A peer-reviewed study published by the Southern Medical Journal of more than 173,000 American women found that women who aborted were 154% more likely to commit suicide than women who carried to term.

Selective abortion based on genetic abnormalities (eugenic termination) is overt discrimination. Physical limitations don't make those with disabilities less than human. The increase in abortions of babies with Down syndrome (over 80% of women choose to abort Down syndrome babies) reduced the Down syndrome population by 15% between 1989 and 2005. It is immoral to kill an unborn child for convenience. Additionally, the Guttmacher Institute reported that 45% of all women having abortions every year have had at least one previous abortion, while 8.6% of abortions reported to the Centres for Disease Control and Prevention in 2014 were undergone by women who had three or more previous abortions. This suggests that many women are using abortion as a contraceptive method, a crude and drastic sort of insurance policy.

If women become pregnant, they should accept the responsibility that comes with producing a child. People need to take responsibility for their actions and accept the consequences. Having sexual intercourse, even when contraceptive methods are used, carries with it the risk of pregnancy. The unborn baby should not be punished for a mistake made by adults. If women are unprepared to care for their children, they should at least put them up for adoption. Abortion promotes a culture in which human life is disposable. The legalization of abortion sends a message that human life has little value. When we tell one another that abortion is okay, we reinforce the idea that human lives are disposable, that we can throw away anything or anyone that inconveniences us. The best thing I can show you to defend life is my Father’s life. It has been a great gift. I have met other survivors of abortion. They are all thankful for Life… when I speak, I speak not only for my father but for the survivors… and also those who cannot yet speak. Human life is a magnificent thing. There is nothing else like it. Every human being, no matter how small, is fearfully and wonderfully made. Every human being, no matter how disregarded, bears the image of God. A Christian call to pro-life action is a call for the children of light to be who they are in Christ. Christians who walk in the light must expose the dark and fruitless works of abortion. The murder of pre-born children is a dark and barren work, and God calls his people to expose it.

“The world will not be destroyed by those who do evil, but by those who watch them without doing anything” -Albert Einstein
