The principles of servant leadership predominately have the central interest in one’s personal growth in order to achieve their fullest potential and capability. Personal development is a vital part in a person's growth, maturity, success, prosperity and happiness which is what servant-leadership focuses on. The servant-leader aims to improve and maintain the well-being of people. A servant-leaders should obtain certain principles in order to be a prime example for others including, the ability to share leadership and responsibilities, selflessness and to be able to prioritise others before themselves, to have a commitment to help people develop and perform to their fullest ability, promoting mental and emotional strength and inspiring a high level of trust and faith rather than control. Being a servant leader involves you acknowledging other people's perspectives, giving them the support they need to meet their personal goals, involve them in decisions and build a sense of community within each other. A person who is seen to be a servant-leader, is someone who is effective to provide guidance and influence the development of someone’s life. The Bible describes servant-leadership through reflecting how like John the Baptist, a servant leader, who sees himself as a 'friend of the Bridegroom', but not as a higher role. “He doesn’t view those with less visible roles as less significant, nor does he covet more visible roles as more significant (1 Corinthians 12:12–26). He seeks to steward the role he’s received as best he can, and gladly leaves the role assignments to God”, communicating that just as John the Baptist was a servant leader, he is not in any way higher than anyone else and they are not in any way preoccupied by personal recognition.

Referencing to a Christian person who lived in the past 100 years demonstrating servant leadership, Mother Teresa dedicated her entire life to serving other people. Through her mental strength and faith, she overcame her critics and did what she knew was right. As mentioned earlier, servant leadership isn’t about seeking personal recognition the only approval that is valuable is the Lord’s as the Lord’s approval is the most loyal of all which is what Mother Theresa signified through her actions and beliefs. Mother Theresa’s life is viewed as a prime example of a servant leader. She demonstrated the ‘perfect role’ of a servant leader as she was a charity worker in India and also a nun. Mother Theresa showed the characteristics of servant leadership of empathy, awareness, persuasion, commitment to the growth of people and building a community purely by leaving home at 18 to pursue a religious life, giving up all her worldly possessions except for the simplest necessities of life: three identical outfits, a pair of sandals, and a tin washing pail to live and work among the poorest of the poor in a remote and unknown country. She founded Missionaries of charity in Kolkata, India and demonstrated great empathy as for 45 years, she was looking after the poor, sick, orphaned and dying. She was a selfless servant leader who dedicated her whole life to making others lives better. Thousands of people were inspired by her servant leader behaviours and followed her footprint to contribute their life to the charity. Mother Teresa had always insisted that her followers live in the same poverty as the people they served. Just like what she said when she was awarded the Nobel Peace Prize: ” …By serving the poor I am serving Him”. Mother Theresa definitely inspires me to act upon my faith and take action in charity work, even as small as donating to organising an event to help others.
