There are several rituals and practices in our family that play a really significant role in shaping our beliefs. On Thanksgiving, I have several lovely memories of my family gatherings and all the delicious entrées that my relatives would cook. Food has so much importance in my family, it's the bond that has kept us together for so many years even decades before I was born. It's as if we display ourselves in our dish when we prepare a meal.
My favorite Thanksgiving tradition in our family is my great-grandmother’s poultry dressing. For years, she kept her recipe a closely guarded secret. Besides that, many years back, when she could no longer fix Thanksgiving on her own, she wanted to give her own grandchildren the recipe. My mother and Aunt Tracy were excited to learn her elusive recipe at last. Without my great-grandma's poultry dressing, Thanksgiving wouldn't be Thanksgiving. Now the tradition continues and my mother and I make it together, which has been a treasured activity of ours.
My great-grandmother’s poultry dressing has even produced a traditional Thanksgiving rivalry. My aunt Tracy and her daughter Tori have been battling with my mom and me for many years to see who can make the best poultry dressing that tastes the most like great-grandma. Every Thanksgiving, when we make poultry dressing to go with our turkey, the entire family loves to dispute over whose dressing tastes the best, and everyone says something different every year. It's our family tradition, and my family has been making poultry dressing for decades. This slight rivalry persists every year, but instead of our usual poultry dressing, my mother and I secretly upgrade the recipe by swapping a few ingredients with others, which is how we win the competition almost every year.
Everyone has their own idea of the best Thanksgiving side dish for their turkey, but our family has always chosen the poultry dressing over all else, including the prize turkey. In my family’s view, there’s nothing that could compare to my great-grandmother ' poultry dressing recipe. Oily, seasoned with herbs, and mildly sweet; This dressing goes well with turkey, cranberry-apple red cabbage, parmesan mashed potatoes, and mushroom sour cream gravy. Any side dishes should be afraid when dressing, stuffing, and turkey are on the table.
To make great-grandma’s poultry dressing, you'll need to start a few days before Thanksgiving. When you prepare a meal, I believe it is a way of expressing who you are and where you come from. Every time we have poultry dressing, it helps me remember the memories we've made as a family, as well as the numerous memories that have been made since this tradition began decades ago.
