This behavior has evolved over many centuries, and many scientists have been trying to explain why this happens. Charles Darwin wrote the book “Origin of Species.” This book describes the behavior of animals and their adaptation. People's behavior also depends on different cultures, ethnic differences, and habitats, and some scientists try to prove that twins similar in appearance may have different characteristics and this proves the theory of nurture.

One of the approaches to studying nurture and nurture is biopsychological.

Biological, for example, may include similar eating habits of a mother and a child. A psychological approach learns behavior and emotions

Another approach is social-cultural, which presupposes that ethnicity and culture influence the behavior of a person. For example, in some cultures, it is a tradition to hug their relatives. Therefore, when children are born surrounded by such customs, they get used to it.

In Frankenstein, the debate between nature vs. nurture is a leading theme. It is demonstrated by Victor Frankenstein’s and the monster’s behavior. Victor’s nurture and its consequences are described at the beginning of the novel where he shows his talent for studying which is influenced by his father, and his growing up in a good family does not teach him to be the same responsible. The creature’s personality suffers because of the lack of nurture from Victor’s side.

Victor grows up in an aristocratic family, where he learns that he is special and can afford more than other people: “When I mingled with other families I distinctly discerned peculiarly fortunate my lot was, and gratitude assisted the development of filial love”. (Shelly, 22) In fact, his childhood taught him to be greedy, despite the fact they adopted a child. Instead of learning the norms and rules of the surrounding where he lives, Victor is pursuing his goal to become a scientist, and this is due to his father’s attitude and influence: “He had taken the greatest precautions that his mind should be impressed with supernatural horrors” (Shelley, 35). The way Victor perceives his father’s lessons implies already the notions of “supernatural” and “horror” which will definitely influence the future of Victor. All in all, it is ambiguous whether nature or nurture influenced Victor’s deeds mostly, but it is apparent that he turned his family’s best practices into his greediness.

The monster, on the other hand, suffers because he does not receive any education from his creator: “Cursed, cursed creator! Why did I live? Why, in that instant, did I not extinguish the spark of existence which you had so wantonly bestowed?” (Shelly, 52) The monster’s behavior is unpredictable, and he tries his best among the villagers, but due to his physical appearance and inability to be a human, he turns into a violent creature who kills others. His creator abandoned him, he did not teach him the basic rules of survival.

In summary, both nature and nurture influenced the characters in Frankenstein. In Victor’s case, he does not take the best practices from his family, even though they gave him the thirst for education. The monster, on the other hand, does not receive the necessary lessons from his “father” which has a bad result in the end.
