I learn two important ideas from《the last leaf》written by O Henry. In the story, Johnsy, Sur and Behrman are friends. When johnsy was sick, she thought she would die when the last leaf fell. She give up all the hope, then Behrman give her hope. As a 11 year international student, I learn never give up hope and never give up yourself. The first important idea I learned was never to give up hope. In this story, Johnsy, Sue and Behrman them are close friend. Their friendship is the kind that can give their lives for each other. It is just like George and Lienne in 《of mice and men》The second important idea I learned is the importance of friendship.
The first important idea l learn, is never give up hope. When I was read, I was ask myself: Can you understand the despair of a patient? I think nobody can. But in this story, Johnsy’s friends get the best way to it gave her hope, and It is courage for her to fight against illness. When Sue want to buy something give Johnsy to eat, the Johnsy answers: “you don’t have to buy anything for me,” and she still looked out the window. “there goes another. No, I don’t want anything to eat. Now there are four. I want to see the last leaf fall before night. Then I’ll go, too.” When I read there, I think the Johnsy was give up all the hope for her sick, although Sue tell her good new about her sick. I think I can understand why her give up, it made me thinking of my middle school. In that time, my math was very bad, the point was lower than bio, so I give up my math results, when the math class I will never listen to my math teacher. One day, my math teacher find me and ask me why I did not listening his teach, and ask me why don't you listen when your grades are poor. I tell him I can not understand what his teach in the class. He just said, “ok, I will help you. Just listening to my teach, I will ensure your math print will higher than higher now. ” and I was listen to his teaching, than my math print was straight up like a rocket, reaching and sometimes exceeding the class average. So I gradually had a hope for mathematics and even thought I could do better. So my hero and I resonate in some ways. We both give up hope and finally find ourselves wrong. Please never give up hope in anytime for anything, it was the author want to tell us.
The second important idea I learn is how importance of friendship. When I was read, I think no one can stand loneliness, and no one does not need friends. How important of friendship do you know? In the story when Behrman dead, the Johnsy was know she was get wrong, she know she must fight with the disease and kill the disease. In the story she said to Sue“it is wrong to want to die. I’ll try to eat now. But first bring me a looking–glass, so that I can sew myself. And then I’ll sit up and watch you cook.” The Behrman’s dead make Johnsy wake up and summon up courage to fight with disease, it make she know she was wrong. The Johnsy, Sue and Behrman them friendship make me thinking of the book name is 《of mice and man》, in that story, Gorgeo and Lienne was a close friend, them love each other and they can not live with out the other. In my life, some body was very look like them close relationship it like G and L them relationship, I was ask G, if one day L missing, would G crazy？ The G tell me, she said she will. In my childhood, my mother was ask my a question:“if one day Lida was missing, would you crazy?” I say yes, and I never want that day coming. For me, I’m luck have some friend, and have 7close friends. That is I didn’t have before. I’m very cherish this time. People always need friends, and everyone all need a close friend forever. So the friendship was very important thing in our life.
The last leaf this book was very short, but many valuable things that we can learn need to be discovered by ourselves. Just like the whole book does not say that we cannot give up hope, but the author secretly tells you this point of view. There's nothing in the book about how many good friends they are, but there are other ways the author can help you empathize with the importance of friendship.
