Nutrient solutions and fertilizers impact plant growth in many ways. According to Teaming with Nutrients by Jeff Lowenfels, plants that experience nutrient deficiencies, are more likely to experience informalities such as wilted or yellowed leaves. In order for a plant to sustain itself, it must have seventeen main elements. Many everyday fertilizers and nutrient solutions provide these elements. The most commonly seen elements out of the seventeen is the N-P-K trilogy. (N for nitrogen, P for phosphorus, and K for potassium). Other common elements that plants need to survive include: Hydrogen, Oxygen, and Carbon; which make up ninety-six percent of the plant’s mass.
Nutrient solutions and fertilizers impact agricultural development as well. Plants and/ or animals that he said plants are critical to our survival. Fertilizers help to produce quality crops. Quality crops sell for more money than non-quality crops. This will help farmers to develop agriculturally, by planting more crops and producing more quality produce. There are numerous methods to the distribution of fertilizers and nutrient solutions. For example, fertilizer can be injected into the ground under the surface of the soil. Another method includes fertigation. Fertigation is the distribution of fertilizers through irrigation systems. This method is very popular with farmers with very large amounts of crops. Other distribution methods include foliar applications. Which is the application of fertilizers to the foliage (leaves). However, the most effect method to distributing fertilizer, according to “Western Fertilizer Handbook” by Western Plant Health Association, is to apply powdered fertilizer evenly over the base of the plant, on top of the soil. This method is the most popular and most effective.
Experts have differing opinions on when is the appropriate time period for fertilizer to be applied to plants. However, the majority believe that fertilizer should be added all through the beginning and middle stages of plant growth. This will allow the plant to be free after it is fully grown. The minority believe that fertilizer should be applied a plant’s entire life cycle. They believe this will give the plant’s the best chance of survival.
Depending on the plant type, the best application area for fertilizer differs. For most plants, the best area is at the bass right above the roots. However, for certain plants, the best area is right underneath the top layer of soil. Both methods are very effective, if used on the correct plants. The “best” application area continues to change over time as the different species of plants increases.
