Goal setting is by having the right attitude to execute the desired results. There are many instances I have set goals and they seem quite unreachable. One example of which I’ve always desired to own my home. I have been to the National Housing Trust quite a few times but was unsuccessful. After my visit to the National Housing Trust, I thought base on the information I received would enable me to achieve the same, but even with all the information received without the correct attitude and determinacy, it will appear as unreachable. I did as they instructed but was faced with quite a huge responsibility of coming up with 10% which would be the payments towards processing fees of the documents etc. I wondered and pondered, on how and where would that fee will come from giving my low paid job. It didn’t amount to many of my plans once more fell to the way-side. That's when I decided to make the correct approach by enrolling in a college to educate myself properly to achieve the ideal job; to match, suit my desired passion in life. In contrast to the former, there are goals that I’ve set and executed perfectly, for example, enrolling in college and I was successful at achieving the same. I have always wanted to be a part of a college to further my education, in order to live a very comfortable life-style. I am now very much overwhelmed with the feeling of joy; just by the mere fact that I have started, and have a long way to go with the right attitude and time management. With that in mind, it keeps me focus to continue to work hard/harder to successfully acquiring my bachelor's degree.

To sum it up, the reason why I wasn’t successful in achieving the first goal, I used the word ‘unrealistic’, to describe the intricacies that surround me achieving such a goal. It’s so because in order for me to purchase a home comes with a wide variation of expenses, timing, and correct attitude and procedures, as well as being very focused; with knowing what I want, and how to achieve it. A thought-out plan wasn’t done correctly, and as such, the goal was unattainable and unreachable because of lack of correct application and salary un-matched the intended outcome of my wishes. The reason I was successful in my second example, was that I decided that I will/was not waste going to wait/waste another second having the burden, heavy weight-some thoughts of not having a degree; of not living the way I’ve always envisioned my life to be. Just watching time past and my life is not moving; of being in slumber like mode, a circular, and repetitive motion, like still water. Those feelings kept haunting me. That's when I knew that I must make a positive move towards my life situations. My thoughts were, ‘If I don’t do it now, I’ll be lost in a still-like motion, effect-of-nowhere’, some would describe being in dream-land. Then I pulled my thoughts together constructively and wrote out a realistic plan. I start researching, networking, and communicating with people and surfing the net. I knew then what I was looking for, and with the added information I received, I proceeded to enroll in UoPeople college.

The difference are as follows. First, I follow the correct procedures and instructions. I made a constructive and thought-out decision to followed the correct route and path with the correct attitude by making applying a conscious, serious and planned out a method to execute the same. And second, I decided that nothing will/won't stand in my way to get my set goal and finish with the highest grades and graduating, and nothing will mislead, distract, distort my judgment, because at the end of the day I have to live with myself, and I want/need the best for my life.

Effective goal-setting is the ability and strength to be driven, strongly, with seriousness, and dedication, with the correct application of proper time management skills and the right method, by working hard towards achieving the same. Effective goal setting is being able to start and finish with great results. According to an online article on Essential Life Skills.net by Zorka Hereford, the purpose of effective goal setting is to achieve what you want in life in a successful, focused and decisive manner by taking the right actions in a lesser time frame. Zorka Hereford also mentioned some of the reasons, why some goals are not reached are. Some of the reasons include lack of confidence, not having a workable plan for achieving them, being unrealistic by expecting too much too soon, fear of failure, and lastly, putting too much pressure on ourselves to accomplish them.

Luckily there are strategies and behaviors we can adopt for successfully setting and achieving goals. Being able to correctly manage your time is a huge advantage, in that it lessens the thoughts, and action of procrastinating, and reduces problems which ultimately results in stressful occurrences.
