College is supposed to be the best years of your life. A time for new experiences and meeting new people from different places all around the world. But, from my own experience, my first year at ASU was completely different from what I imagined it to be. Before entering college, I always wonder how I would adjust to transitioning from high school to college. However, I soon realized that there were many new challenges that I expected to overcome in my first year of college. After finishing my first year at college, I soon realized that with the right advice and guidance, these challenges are not as hard as they seem.

As a new college student, I understand the transition from high school to a big college like ASU can be scary, but you should always have an open mind for new experiences in life. Now that you have entered college, you're going to have so much independence and opportunities as opposed to when you were in high school. You have the freedom to choose what you want to study, what classes you want to take, when you want to study, when to go to class, etc. However, with so much freedom, it is easy to slip up and cause a mistake, which can lead you to get into trouble in the future. You need to remember that you are in college in the first place for an education that can lead to a career for you. So, with those goals in mind, how you end up is all up to you. You need to be self-motivation in order to accomplish your goals.

Studying, in general, is not very fun especially when you are a freshman in college. College is supposed to be the best time of your life with parties and new experiences, etc. As mentioned earlier in the previous paragraph, you are in college for a reason, so you should focus on your studies instead since you are only going to take a test once, and if you fail it, it is going to affect your grades badly. There will always be other parties. In order to succeed in college, you need to have a good balance of schoolwork and fun. You can make a schedule to help balance schoolwork and studying time.

College is a whole different experience compared to high school. If you ever went to a relatively small high school, transiting to a big school like ASU might be shocking to you at first. A big school like ASU with thousands of students might make you feel overwhelmed and stressed out. Constantly feeling stressed and overwhelmed by crowds of strangers, will make you less likely to make new friends. Even if you feel nervous around strangers or get overwhelmed by large crowds of strangers like myself, you can always take small steps, like introducing yourself to your science lab partners or a classmate who sits next to you. Although making new friends are important, it should not distract you from your schoolwork.

The final and most important challenging thing in college is adapting to the workload. Many upcoming freshmen are not prepared for the workload they will have in college. Many freshmen will have so much homework and test to study for that they might fall behind in other courses. This is normal, every freshman has experienced this problem including me. Although this issue can cause other problems that can lead you to get into serious trouble. I suggest getting a head start on certain assignments and also either asking a professor for help or going to a tutoring center. In fact, most of the professors are nice and friendly to new students and are willing to help them if they have any problems.

The first year at college might seem frightening and stressful at first, nevertheless, all new experiences in life always come with benefits and risks. The first year at college might be challenging for you, however, it is always important to keep an open mind and be positive about your situation. After almost completing my first year of college, I can say from personal experience that at times college can be difficult and stressful. Feeling stressed and overwhelmed can lead you to be less motivated to finish schoolwork. When I felt stressed and not motivated, I would always remember this quote from the author John Green: “Every year many stupid people graduate from college, if they can do it, so can you”. At first, this quote might seem mean-spirited, nevertheless, this quote helps to revitalize my motivation and mood to help me finish my work.

In conclusion, the first year of college can be stressed full and difficult at times, with all the challenges new students face. Although with an open and positive mind and the advice from this essay, I believe it will not be so hard.
