‘Wall-E’ is a movie from 2008 produced by Pixar. The story follows the last robot on the Earth, named Wall-E. For 700 years he has wandered the Earth cleaning trash. He has developed a personality, and when he sees EVE, a shiny new robot, he follows her onto a spaceship. There reside the humans who have become helpless fatties. The storyline is entertaining and interesting and the movie a masterpiece. It should be required that every child watches this movie. It should be a requirement because it shows how the Earth and humanity could end up as. It has a great role-model, EVE, and it is very entertaining and amusing.
In the movie there are shown two problems that have manifested in today’s society; one of them is a first-world problem, the other is a problem that affects all humanity. The first-world problem is fat and obesity. Around one in three adults are obese and one in six children. If we start talking about being healthy with our children when they are school aged, then they would stay healthier and adopt a healthy lifestyle when they become adults. This movie could be a great conversation starter for that, it is as well a good conversation starter for plastic and trash. It is a huge problem that we must deal with as one today. It is speculated that there will be more plastic than fish in the sea in 2050. Everyone must be aware, even children, when it comes to this because many small things make a big change. In the midst of these problems is EVE, trying to fight against them in her own way.
EVE is more than a shiny new robot, she is a great role model. The definition of role-model is a person looked to by others as an example to be imitated (Google Dictionary). Even though children can’t become robots, there is a lot they can learn from her. EVE is tough as well as sweet, she is determined to finish her directive and will kick anyone’s ass for trying to derail it. But she is also sweet to Wall-E, when he sees he cares for her and is not scared to show her feelings. EVE is brave, she is not scared of fighting for what is right, even when an authority figure tells her to stand down. EVE takes the movie from good to great.
Even though there is never spoken a word in the first half of the movie, the viewers can understand both Wall-E and EVE completely. There are both funny and sad moments in that time the viewers become invested in the movie, both the love story and the hope for humanity. Many have given the movie great reviews, among them Kenneth Turan, who wrote this about the movie: “Daring and traditional, ground-breaking and familiar, apocalyptic and sentimental, ‘Wall-E’ gains strength from embracing contradictions that would destroy other films” (Kenneth Turan, 2008). Like he says, it embraces contractions that work very well in the film. That combined with the captivating love story and the rib-tickling humor makes a great film that everyone can enjoy.
‘Wall-E’ is a movie that can change the minds of the next generation. It is a movie that everyone can enjoy and laugh over. It has a great role model for kids to look up to and a great message about how the great humanity and our beautiful Earth could end like. I remember when I watched it first, it had a huge impact on my life, because after I watched it, I insisted to my mom that we start recycling. I recommend it for everyone because it is so simple and beautiful movie.
