China is a big country with creeping fundamental problems. In the light of the 2000s, China has been rapidly renovating everything and conforming to the new normals of the world. Their aerospace industry has recently been encountering technological problems, causing international unrest, and allowing China to create many incredible goals for the future of the industry. China’s challenges that slow advancements in the aerospace industry require understanding. Even further, how China has charged along in creating its current aerospace industry is very important to know. Additionally, it is important to understand their ambitions for the technology and world standing of their industry.

Challenges that hold China back are very significant and have a huge impact on what happens to the future. One major problem for their aerospace industry is the lack avionics knowledge to construct proper aircrafts and engines. Moreover, China demands domestic products, such as complete engines, but only 50% of components are produced in their own country. A consequence of the lack of expertise in aeronautics has set their technology back by 20-30 years from competitors. Additionally, their investments into foreign technology has resulted in very little progress; for example, they spent $1 billion on 12 US assets for aviation that never blossomed in favor of China. The United States has been cutting ties with China recently; tariffs from a trade war are active and are blocking about $50 billion of Chinese goods. Domestic challenges for COMAC’s ARJ21 from the Civil Aviation Administration of China has held it from the mass production market for nine years. Lastly, China’s leadership is responsible for pressuring the aerospace industry to catch up to the modern expectations, producing a sharp decrease in production quality.

As for how China manages to grow their aerospace industry, they make partnerships with companies like McDonnel Douglas to start producing planes like the MD-82 in China. Other planes such as the C919 are produced and tested in China for commercial use; the C919 took its maiden flight in May of 2017. The flight was one and a half hours long over 200 kilometers, which created 800 orders from companies asking for one. The ARJ21 is a 90 seat jet that was designed from the MD-80 and has been an idea to create industry growth and advancement. Investments like the $14.4 billion to create a company like Aero Engine Corporation of China helps push the innovation of the aerospace industry forward. Furthermore in space, they have founded a Strategic Support Force (SSF) to lead and protect China’s space projects and areas. Partnerships between countries assists in joint advancements in technology and relations for the better. For example, the China-Russia joint draft proposal, or the “Treaty on Prevention of the Placement of Weapons in Outer Space Objects” in 2008 and 2014, created an alliance.

China’s ambitions for aeronautics are huge for the next few decades. A main goal of China is to reduce reliance on foreign technology and produce domestic products for their own use. They also expect themselves to overtake the US’s aviation market by 2022. Aircraft airworthiness for the C919 is for 2021 and should replace the foreign freight or passenger airplanes currently in China. A new group in China is expected to rework policy making for the better of their future endeavors. Chinese universities and corporations in the next step for domestic manufacturing are expected to produce the most advancements in avionics technology. China’s network of engineers and experts from state-owned and private corporations are being produced more to support the future aerospace industry. China is also predicting a change from logistical growth in advancements in technology to exponential growth in the coming years. Space is the new frontier for the future and China is diving in with great ambitions to take an early advantage. They want to build China up for the expansion into space and expect to rejuvenate their nation with that expansion. They plan to participate in asteroid mining, lunar experimentation, and deep space exploration.

Through their Aerospace Science and Technology Corporation, China is striving to be the leader in space tech by 2045. Additionally, a linking project with the Belt and Road countries and others is being created, which would make a Belt and Road Space Information Corridor for a tighter exchange of technological information. China is focusing their war-fighting assets into learning the space domain and creating a training regime for it, which has inspired new ambitions for aerospace technology in space. As President of China, Xi is taking advantage of their massive economy to improve their space technology and to streamline their military instruments in space. They are planning to colonize the moon before mars because they see it as a more valuable and efficient learning experience. Lastly, China is aiming to create a China-led space domain under their rules so they can heavily control space and their competitors.

For aerospace in general and it being a huge market that generates a lot of activity, China is becoming a bigger player in the market. China is one of the world powers and their activities and changes impact every country. With that in mind, their jump to switching from foreign technology to domestically produced technology will affect the global market’s aerospace section, which is 20% of the market itself . Not only will it affect their economic side, but the people’s morale in China will increase. China is creating their own technology and the people are liking it, creating a tighter relationship between government and the people. On the competitive side, China is aiming to overtake the US’s aerospace technology by 2022, which will turn the tables of who holds the most authority in the market and will influence other countries’ aerospace markets.

The aerospace industry in China is continuously growing with the intent to enhance China’s ability of domestic aircraft for domestic use. It is important to understand the challenges China is fighting and have overcome, the path they have carved and used to get this far, and what China has envisioned for its aerospace industry in the future. Out of China’s many accomplishments in the 21st century, this ambitious effort to innovate and domesticate their aerospace industry will elicit a happier and more united China.
