Why I Want to Participate in Leadership Program: Essay

Introduction: The Importance of Leadership and the Program's Purpose

Leadership is defined as the ability to empower followers (Conger 17) through guidance, example, and encouragement. Leaders vary in style: some are bold and transform their followers by instilling in them a vision of what they can achieve and how to achieve it. Other leaders are humble and inspire their followers by serving them, identifying their needs, and ensuring that those needs are met. Therefore, a leadership program is important for students whether in high school or university. So, that's why my group is conducting this leadership program to improve leadership behavior in their lives.

Program Overview: 'We Lead! We're Form!' in Sekolah Menengah Kebangsaan Taman Tuanku Jaafar

My group is undertaking a Leadership Program from the upper level and lower level which is from one to six in Sekolah Menengah Kebangsaan Taman Tuanku Jaafar. The title of this program is 'We Lead! We're Form! Eight people participated in the program, one male and seven female. This program is run through google meet because of our current situation, which is Covid-19. So, it's difficult for us to carry out this program. Therefore, there are many pros and cons that occur when this Leadership program is running. At the same time, there are many challenges that we also need to face during this program.

The advantage of this program is students can improve their self-confidence. This is because self-confidence is the attitude that students need when they want to become qualities of good leaders. For example, in my program, we do activities such as watching videos on youtube about improving their self-confidence in themselves. Therefore, a person who lacks self-confidence can never be a good leader. A person must be confident enough to ensure that others follow him. The leader must have confidence in his own decisions and actions. If he's unsure, how can people want to follow him? So, a confident attitude is essential for a person to be a good leader.

Next, build a positive attitude and also the advantages of my Leadership program. This is because we teach them how to build a positive attitude in themselves. For example, honesty and integrity. These two attitudes are so important for a person who wants to become a good leader. At the same time, honesty is essential in order to win people's trust. It is likely that every leader that loses trust is bound to fail. People are not going to work with full effort because of the immoral leader. So this can affect the cooperation between leaders and followers. Thus, in our program, we always emphasize these two positive attitudes in themselves for them to know how important these things are.

In addition, in my program, we also teach them how to have good communication between leaders and followers. For example, we show them a video about how to have good communication between people. After that, we explain the video when they already finish watching. Moreover, we do these activities because we feel that communication is important for a leader. At the same time, poor communication between leaders and followers can bring wrong messages. Besides that, good communication will increase the rate of work. Also, the chances of followers making mistakes will be reduced.

In my leadership program, we also story about a good role model. We said that a good leader must surely inspire others. The leader has to be a role model for his followers. He must also motivate them whenever possible. Moreover, in difficult situations, the leader must not lose hope. Therefore, we include the story about Mahatma Gandhi for the students. For instance, we tell them that Mahatma Gandhi was a very excellent example of a good leader. He was a steadfast believer in non-violence. He caused the British to leave India with his brilliant leadership abilities. This was probably the most unique struggle for freedom. This is because Gandhi was given freedom without violence. So, according to the story, the students will again open their eyes that making themselves the best role model is also important to make good leaders in the future.

Building Self-Confidence and Positive Attitudes: Key Qualities of Good Leaders

Besides that, there were many challenges that we needed to face when conducting this Leadership program. This is because as we remember, our nation is in the middle of the Covid 19 epidemic. These have contributed to the online training and study sessions. Most teaching classes are performed remotely through e-learning. So we also need to do this program online such as google meet. Basically, a leadership program will be more effective when done face-to-face. But, the situation of Covid-19 is increasing day by day. Therefore, we as an organizer of this program wants to keep students safe from being infected with covid 19.

It was a struggle for us because of our different periods and conditions at home. This is because not all people have a good connection to the internet. Some of the students stay inland like in a village. So, this can affect the connection to the internet and drag the times of the program. For example, we need to wait for them for about a few minutes for them to join google meet, or when they already join suddenly they leave google meet because of the slow line. Thus, students will be left with instructions that the organizer said and when they enter google meet, they will ask again what they need to do. Hence, this makes the instructor feel tired to repeat the same instruction over and over again. This is the challenge that we face when conducting the leadership program and we hope our next program will be smoother in the future.

Based on the evaluation form from this program, most students give positive feedback. For example, they said that after attending this program they can foster their communication skills in themselves, such as they can know how to have good communication between people. Besides that, they also improve their level of self-confidence when being a leader or in front of people. In addition, these programs also give them the opportunity to learn and develop their skills, as well as to give them a sense of responsibility for their own duty. So, they can be well prepared to face the challenge when they become a leader in the future.

Lastly, from the evaluation form also students give a suggestion to improve this program so this program can become more effective. For example, students said that they want the organizer to conduct more activities in this leadership program. But, actually, we already planned to do many activities but we have limited time due to the connection. Therefore, in the next program maybe we will improve our connection to the internet. Next, the students also suggest the instructor have more sense of humor so the program will be more fun and interesting. So, the instructor will focus more on these issues when doing the program in the future for our common good.

In conclusion, these Leadership programs are important for students. This is because good leadership is a gateway to success. Bad leadership, on the other hand, is a guarantee of failure. As a result, good leaders are what make the world go round. So, in the future, we will do more programs that involve leadership.
