In the university, people learn about “identity” so much. What is the importance of knowing own identity? Many people have experienced to think about this question “Who Am I?” Usually, many Japanese university students spend a lot of time to find answers, because when people enter the university, they can meet so many kinds of people and get many new experiences. For example, start a part-time job, join a new community at university, study more specifically than high school and get more freedom. After entering the university, students get freedom and more responsible. They must choose their own direction. They are two important points, self-identity, and gender identity.
Self-identity is a very important thing in life. Merriam-Webster says the definition of identity is “1a: the distinguishing character or personality of an individual: INDIVIDUALITY. b: the relation established by psychological identification. 2: the condition of being the same with something described or asserted establishes the identity of stolen goods. 3a: sameness of essential or generic character in different instances. b: sameness in all that constitutes the objective reality of a thing: ONENESS. 4: an equation that is satisfied for all values of the symbols 5: IDENTITY ELEMENT.” Sometimes Japanese people do not care about their identity, but it is problem. There are four reasons. First, First, keeping self-identity is important because it enlarges their character. That is, when they know who they are, have confidence in themselves, and are able to identify their strengths, they emerge as stronger individuals. Second, it keeps them unique and categorizes them from everyone else. God created each of us differently for a reason. Embrace who they are. If they do not quit this reaction, they cannot love themselves. Third, continuing their self-identity keeps them comfortable. The sooner they embrace themselves, defects and all, the sooner they rid their selves of insecurities and become comfortable with who they are. And, believe them, they cannot put a price on being comfortable in their own skin. Finally, we become more aware of our immediate environment and our place in it. We are all here for a purpose and recognizing our self-identity equips us with what we need to live out that purpose. So, people should maintain their self-identity and remain true to themselves always.
The other important point is gender identity. There are many kinds of gender. The most common generic name is LGBTQ and now, users of Twitter can choose their gender from fifty-eight choices. People have more choices than before. One of the most serious issues is Gender identity disorder. As it is most commonly called, is the deduction or confusion resulting from the disconnection between the sex and gender people are accredited at birth and the way people genuinely feel and act. A newer term, gender dysphoria, perhaps better captures the psychological aspects of the condition and how the confusion over gender roles causes extreme discomfort for individuals pressured to comply with socially accredited roles that simply do not fit them. However, it is labeled, gender identity disorder can cause tremendous difficulties for children. It can result in many distressing and troubling issues if it is not identified and treated. If left undiagnosed, and children try to conceal the symptoms, it often leads to restless disorder, depression, and suicidal thoughts. Other surveys have noted that children with GID are often bullied and ignored by associates.
I have been in the US for five months. I noticed that the Japanese valued reputation from others at the time. This is because people who have differences from others such as appearance or personality can be a target of burring, especially in elementary school. The most important thing for kids to live in a peaceful society is to realize that it is wonderful to have differences from others. In addition, they need to booth self-esteem.
