I believe that what we call soccer and the rest of the world calls football is the greatest sport in the world. In fact, I believe that soccer is a greater sport than basketball and this is my reasoning behind this thesis.
Many different countries have conflicting opinions on who invented the game now known as soccer. The ancient Greeks, Egyptians and Chinese all claim to be the first to play soccer with roots dating back as far as 2500 B.C but many of these variations revolved around rules that are closer to rugby than modern-day soccer. The ancient Chinese game of Tsu’Chu is the closest to our modern-day soccer. It was likely used as a training exercise for soldiers. The game consisted of kicking a small leather ball into a net made of bamboo poles. You may use any body parts aside from your hands, much like soccer.
Soccer is the most popular sport in the world with an astounding 4 Billion fans worldwide. According to the World Atlas, over half of the globe’s population are soccer fans.
According to the same source, Basketball is only the 7th most popular sport in the world behind Soccer, Cricket, Field Hockey, Tennis, Volleyball, and Table Tennis. With only 825 million fans worldwide basketball is less than ¼ as popular as Soccer. Not only does soccer have the most global fans it also has The most-watched competition in the world, the FIFA World Cup, the most professional leagues, the highest-paid athletes and the most followed athlete Cristiano Ronaldo. All these statistics are points that help prove that soccer is better than not only basketball but all other sports.

Not only do soccer players cover more total distance than basketball players they also play for a longer period of time with fewer breaks. Basketball players have timeouts, breaks after each 12 minute quarter and countless stoppages of play with frequent substitutions. Soccer players Play got 90 minutes with one short break after 45 minutes.
In conclusion, for the reasons that I have brought to your attention and the backing evidence I have used to help prove these claims I believe that it is correct to say that soccer is better than basketball. In fact, soccer is the greatest sport in the world and will continue to be for many years to come.
