On the 16th of July 1969, three courageous astronauts, Michael Collins, Buzz Aldrin and Neil Armstrong began their perilous journey to the Moon, the latter two becoming the first humans to walk on its surface. America’s then president John F. Kennedy deemed the Apollo program as “...the most hazardous... and greatest adventure on which man has ever embarked,” stretching our limits with unending perseverance. Why then, do so many believe it was a hoax? The answer is none other than ignorance.

Ever since the event, conspiracy theorists have attempted (and failed) to argue against the legitimacy of the landings, formulating ‘evidence’ which is all easily refutable. From the waving flag to the lack of stars, all ‘proof’ can be debunked with science. Even still, many choose to believe these false claims, which is truly insulting to the scientists, engineers and astronauts who put their heart and soul into the Apollo program.

Now, let’s take a deeper look. First we will tackle the waving flag. This is not difficult to understand with some high school physics. When the flag was placed, they had to wiggle the pole into the ground. Because the Moon has next to no atmosphere, and one sixth of Earth’s gravity, the flag’s inertia (tendency to resist changes in motion) caused it to continue swaying with nothing to prevent it from doing so. I mentioned that the Moon has no atmosphere, so where are the stars in the photos? Could this be proof of a hoax? Nice try, but no. The lunar surface was brightly lit by sunlight, so simply, in order to focus exposure on the surface, the camera blurred out any fainter, distant starlight.

Still think the Moon landing was faked? I encourage you to think again. In 1969, we really did go to the moon, (and astronauts went back- 5 more times!). The next giant leap is Mars, and I believe even greater things are on the horizon, but people are stubborn, and no matter what there will always be conspiracy seekers who will turn a blind eye to the truth.
