“Youth cultures in general are about leisure, having a good time, looking good and getting high.” As Rouse saying, youth culture is a way to enjoy life. We can explain this term sprat . ‘youth’, obviously, describe the generation is about children, adolescents and young adults. ‘culture’,is about social behaviour that people who think they are similar gather in integrated groups.

They redefine and transfer the existing consumer objects with groups’ concept. What behind the garments is their values and aspirations. In this essay I wanna talk about preppy chic—the demands of a new generations.
After World War ll, young people ask for their own special styles and characters. And this was the first time of whole fashion story, young people made a public protest to against wearing same clothing with their parents even grandparents. As a result, new independent market appeared to special cater to growing youth groups, and they began to seek image style out of ordinary. Preppy chic during this period was carefully constructed. On the one hand, it established an identity for the new generation who are fashion-conscious, keeping their spirit of youth. On the other hand, it also different from a rebellious spirits like Rockabilly or the Beat Generation.
Preppy chic was inspirited from the united states’ top elite preparatory schools. It was also called as “ivy style”. Almost students from ivy league like Princeton, Harvard, were belonged to ‘leisure class’. They were known for wearing sports suits that mark social, political and economic status. Such as an ensemble consisting of a natural shouldered blazer in earthy tones of brown or grey herringbone tweed, a button-down shirt made of oxford cloth, a diagonally striped ‘rep’ tie in tightly woven silk and a pair of flat-fronted trousers in grey flannel or wide ribbed corduroy. Besides that, choosing a pair of correct shoes is also important for authentic preppy chic. The loafers in black or brown leather from Brooks Brothers—the oldest men’s clothier in the United States- was really popular in that time.
Preppy chic was also accepted by young females during that period, they already got the freedom to wear comfortable and practical clothes in time of war. With time going by, more and more females access to universities, their style of dressing altered changed accordingly. “Bobbysoxer” was main reflection of preppy chic of women. “bobbysoxers”, a term first used in 1944 to denote the fans of swing music, who were often characterized as spirited and feisty.
The girls prefer jumpers with Peter Pan collars, Bobby Soxers crowd in a hotel hallway waiting to catch a glimpse of Errol Flynn, 1945 Alameda, California knee-length skirts and penny loafers. However, the related dress from head to toe is only the first step of a successful preppy chic, in addition, choosing the right brands, in the right combinations, detail and detraction are the most important parts.
Therefore, what preppy chic represents is not just the strict dress regulations of students in the same college. Once these clothes are matched carefully, they become the “uniforms” for these young people to consolidated their sense of identify.
