Class Activity Sept. 21
The advertisement I have chosen for rhetorical situation analysis is from the World War II era.
Like the example advertisement in our class activity, you have covered all the essential and
fundamental aspects visible in the advertising. Firstly, the target audience of the ad and how it
was created during the height of World War II when it was emphasized that women could be
both strong and feminine. My poster also has similar fundamental aspects. While analyzing, it
reveals how a sign can have different characteristics and elements. The ad's powerful message
reads, "Longing will not bring him back sooner… Get a war job!" Created by Lawrence Wilbur
and distributed by the U.S. Government Printing Office in collaboration with the War Manpower
Commission in 1944, this poster is a stark reminder of the extraordinary circumstances faced
during times of war.
The poster primarily speaks about women being strong and feminine while still having an
essential role as housewives and providers because of the war. However, my analysis can also be
interpreted as expressing a new transition turning point for society as women set up our future
with their new profound roles. The societal impact of women entering the workforce, which
began during World War II, continues today. It not only continues the message of the poster but
also lays the foundation for a positive perception of women's capabilities in roles in World War
II. Women stepped up into a traditionally male-dominated industry, showing their resilience, and
this transformation did not serve as a temporary wartime solution. It caused a significant shift in
gender dynamics. This poster is very captivating; even now, it affects each generation. This
recognition of women's contributions in all areas of life, both maternal, physical, and mental.
My overall connection is that the poster I chose has a deep, profound societal connection more
than the propaganda, which I find very captivating because when people see that poster, they
know what you were excited about in the example. Still, when I see it, I see how many lives have
changed because of it and how many resilient women had to take on that role besides being
propaganda. Overall, the rhetorical situation has a different content because of the purpose and
setting that the audience is trying to receive with that poster. All elements from sense, location,
and audience have reached a good connection from my statement. As for the environment, it was
a crucial period for meaning and pushing an agreed narrative that still impacts people's lives. The
history that still impacts people's lives till now and for the audience is not only those women in
that time but the future generations.
