1)In what sense did the Reconstruction amendments mark a second founding of the United States? The reconstruction amendments expanded liberty from whites to blacks by voiding many laws discriminating against blacks. The reconstruction amendments redefined what the constitution stood for, once regarding federal and state relations. Now used as a catalyst for vulnerable minorities to gain freedom and liberties. Citizens' rights were once defined by Indvidual states, now transferred to federal level. 2) What is birthright citizenship and why is it important? Birthright citizenship is the act of giving full naturalized citizenship to any human being born on American soil. Basically, the legal status of citizenship “acquired through birth to a citizen parent ". It is important because it protects all future citizens under the law, gives them rights, and makes them equal to everyone else. 3)Why did ownership of land and control of labor become major points of contention between former slaves and whites in the South? If the white folk lost control of land and labor, they thought it as though they lost their freedoms and right to livelihood. Their livelihood was stripped when the government took their land and gave it to the now freed slaves. Former slaves began renting or owning their own land to make a livelihood. They saw owning land as true freedom as opposed to working better jobs on white own farms. 4) what national issues and attitudes combined to bring an end to reconstruction by 1877? Souths traditional leaders bitterly opposed the reconstruction, denouncing them as inefficient and black supremacy. Not being able to accept change, frightened by notion of their insecurities as black men could be equal or better. Reconstruction called for higher taxes to pay for new facilities and railroads. With whites going farther into debt, there was much disagreement as they did not see their financial future being sustainable. The most prominent factor for disdain towards reconstruction was black men having an equal voice at the ballot box instead of the action box. 5) what caused the confrontation between President Johnson and congress over reconstruction policies? President Johnson and Congress both had different agendas regarding the Reconstruction act. President Johnson sought to reunite the broken country, pardoning Confederate leaders. Not caring about protecting the former slaves. Congress on the other hand, had plans to punish the South while empowering the now freed slaves. Giving them land that was once their masters. Congress also passed the Tenure of Office Act, prohibiting the President from removing anyone from Office, including Cabinet members. Johnson saw this political move as an unconstitutional restriction. He retaliated by removing an ally of the Radicals. Secretary of War Edwin M Stanton.
