Bullying is a Crime
Bullying is a huge problem today in schools for all ages. It’s something that
comes in all different forms such as physical, verbal, social and cyber bullying.
Children deal with being bullied daily and that leads to negative effects non the
child’s self-esteem, education, and development and so much more. If you sit and
think about it, we have all seen bullying happen in a way and it’s not something to be
proud about but also most of us know how it feels to be bullied too. Everyone has
their opinion on why children bully others and don’t consider them criminal’s instead
make excuses for them. A criminal is someone who has committed a crime and
bullying a crime no matter what form of bullying it is. It is said that over one hundred
thousand students will stay home every day because of bullying. I am proposing that
bullying any form should be considered a crime.
When you think of the work bullying what is the first thing that comes to
mind? I want you to really think about that question because we all have different
thoughts and views. I don’t want you to feel as though I am aggressively attacking
bullies, but I am trying to come across in a nicely manner. I personally have seen
what bullying can do a person mentally and physically and nothing good comes out
of it. With bullying happening every day to children at school or over social media it
takes a toll on that individual in so many ways. I do understand that many people
don’t like to put the blame on children who are the bullies and wouldn’t consider it a
crime, but I just want you to keep an open mind while you continue to read. Every
word after this will be impactful and will open your eyes to so many pieces of
information you didn’t know of, and you might just change your opinion and view
towards bullying being considered a crime.
First, School is a place that children should feel safe at and feel excited about
and want to learn new things and make friends. When a child becomes frightened
and feels the need to ask to stay home due to being bullied then you know there’s an
issue. The people who are the bullies are typically people who don’t get the
attention they need from home, feel powerless and or suffer from insecurities so
they thrive for it elsewhere. Bullying is a serious matter which leads to suicide at
times when the bullying gets extreme. “A Research done by the Journal of the
American Medical Association (JAMA) Pediatrics reveals that bullying could have
worse effects, with bullied kids aged 9-21 that are twice as likely to have suicidal
thoughts compared to those who were not bullied. (playgroundeqipment). Due to so
many incidents and tragedies of bullying there are certain states and countries that
are fighting for laws to protect the victim and their rights. “Victoria, Australia has its
anti-bullying legislation known as the “Brodie’s Law” which took effect last June
2011. It considers bullying a crime because of the tragic suicide of a young woman,
Brodie Panlock, who was bullied at work. At present, the law is applied to any form of bullying even in schools or on the internet and perpetrators can be punished by up
to 10 years in jail.” (playgroundequipment). Bullying is something that starts small
and turns into something very tragic for the victim.
