Politics, by definition, is an activity of an individual with the intention of gaining power. It has always been a part of human society since a long time ago and until now as a community of people need a leader. Some individuals have mastered this activity and are able to change how they speak to convince others to trust them as their leader. These individuals have a specific method in approaching the public when they are persuading the public. This research is conducted to gain a substantial amount of insight towards these methods. The general method is politicians use positive language during campaigns.

First and foremost, it has been a well-known fact that politicians need a team of people who are trusted to support their success. This team is known as a political party and the politician is a representative of this party. According to Kevin J. Mullinix, the public trusts a politician based on their political party’s ideals, popularity, and support towards certain legislations. Thus, politicians use a more supportive language in their campaigns when they are referring to their political party such as their good qualities, their ranks, and their contributions.

Moreover, people have a lot to consider other than just pure facts from the past. They need to know that their leader is able to think several steps ahead and that they can trust the plans made by their future leader. Politicians and their parties must know this and should be able to create a plan to fix current problems and improve current potentials in all branches of the country such as economy, education, employment, etc. According to a study done by MITGOV/LAB, out of 85 RA interviews, 31% mentioned the promises made by the politicians and some other citizens said that the promises helped them decide which candidate to choose by judging which politician’s language is more probable to keep his/her promises. These statistics prove that politicians need to be able to reassure the public of their leadership by giving promises which sounds very probable that they would do it.

In addition, people would decide their choices based on considerations of the benefits and liabilities. Politicians, when they are in campaigns, are promoting or advertising themselves so that people would choose them over others. Therefore, they need to show the public of their benefits and positive qualities rather than their liabilities. Some politicians would share their liabilities as well to convey a truthful image in the public eye but this would also implicitly mean that they are sharing a positive detail of themselves. According to a study by Florian Meier from Aalborg university, politicians are believed to share information which shows improvement in the society, economics, health, etc to increase the chances of election during their campaign. This proves that politicians share positive information more frequently.
