Intro

Success is the combination of many small events that add up to a big event, and you can’t really explain it with words.

It is something that happens on a daily basis, in a way that we’re not aware of. It’s not something we can be consciously aware of.

In other words: success is the result of many small events that add up to a big event, and you can’t really explain it with words.

Therefore: if you want to know what success is and how you can achieve it, then read on.

Success is Different for Everyone

Success is a concept that is often misunderstood. Many entrepreneurs, startups, and even executives struggle with the concept of success. They try to define it as simple as possible but end up creating a far more complicated picture than they expected.

The best way to define success for me (and I hope for you too) is:

Success = happiness money time knowledge.

If you are happy, then you are successful!

If you are successful, then money and time have added value to your life. And if time has added value to your life, then knowledge has added value to it too!

So when someone asks for a definition of success, I would say that is the first step in finding out what success really means. Because if you don’t know what success means, you can’t define or measure it; which makes defining it all the more difficult.

The Pursuit of Success

We often call successes what we want them to be. We want it to be an achievement that stands out from the crowd of thousands of others. We want it to signal to us that we were at the right place at the right time and were able to accomplish something remarkable. But success is not something that can be quantified in any particular way.

Success does not just happen easily or with no effort on our part. We are constantly working and striving in order to succeed. It’s probably one of the reasons why so many people believe in luck, but luck is a function of having certain advantages, not a reflection of individual skill or effort.

The best way to measure success is by recognizing how much you have accomplished, how much you have improved, and whether you are happy with where you are today. And happiness is a pretty subjective thing, so don’t let anyone convince you otherwise!

Success is Not a Destination, It's a Journey

Most people that you talk to about failure tend to focus on the destination, aka success. They seem to think they should be able to just “settle down and retire” after a few failures. And while this is certainly an option, it is often not the most viable one.

Achieving success isn’t a goal in itself; it’s more of a means. It’s not something you do to get there, but rather something that helps the journey along. Success can be defined as:

    • Getting the right people into your business so that they are doing what they are best at
    • Having the right technology in place so that you can reach your goals on time and at prices that work for your customers

These things don’t happen by themselves; they have to happen together. The reason why I say this is because these are just as important as what you do with them once you have them!

In my experience, most founders fail because they focus too much on building their product without ever worrying about how it will be used. When trying to figure out how it will be used, I always find myself focusing on what kind of user she would be willing to migrate from the current product to — which often means looking past her individual capabilities and abilities (aka “users') and instead look at what type of users are most likely to migrate from one product to another (which usually means looking past their individual deficiencies).

This also has implications for how we communicate with our users: if we aren't trying hard enough (and by “trying hard' I mean doing everything possible) then we risk alienating them with our lack of effort in communicating with them (and the constraints under which we operate).

Conclusion

Success is the theoretical outcome of a process. For example, let’s say that you are in a 10-person startup and want to launch a new product. You decide to go for it because you are confident your product will be successful — you know it will be successful. However, you also know that this process is one of failure (you haven’t launched yet).

Success is not something that happens all of the time: success is the rare case where everything goes as planned, and there are no unforeseen problems along the way. Success is about finding that one perfect moment when everything aligns perfectly with the ideal outcome. Success is about being in the right place at just the right time, when in fact most startups fail at least twice during the process.

The thing to keep in mind here is that success is not absolute: it depends on many different factors such as market conditions (e.g., what companies do we compete against), user needs and expectations, etc. The point here is not to aim at a certain level of success but rather to prepare yourself for any possible scenario so that if things go wrong, you won’t lose too much sleep over it and can quickly recover from it by doing more things better than before (and thus becoming more successful).
