Hello everyone, I would like to thank you for taking time out of your day to participate in this anti-gun rally. My name is Chris Gardner I stand here today in protest of the availability and legality of guns in our country we call home.
Four days ago on April 28th as you all know, a man named Martin Bryant arrived in Port Arthur - Tasmania, and opened fire in a local cafe and gift shop, killing 35 and wounding 23 people with the aid of his Colt AR-15, a semi-automatic military rifle and L1A1, Self-Loading fully automatic battle rifle.

One of the many victims of this cowardly act was my good friend Peter Nash. Peter was a young, kind, smart, and joyous person, anyone who ever met him would second me on that. Peter was only 19 years old, a mere student, and his life was brutally taken away, Stolen! not only by Martin Bryant but by the gun laws in this country.
Now is not the time for so-called ‘thoughts and prayers’, thoughts and prayers don’t create change, thoughts and prayers don’t save lives, thoughts and prayers don’t prevent mass shootings and thoughts and prayers don’t bring back victims of gun violence!
The gun control and legality of possessing a gun are appalling, we need to create change and it needs to happen now! It makes me SICK knowing how easily I could acquire a gun. How long until the next shooting?
Semi and fully-automatic guns such as those used by Martin Bryant, are nothing but killing machines that serve no purpose to be available to the general public.
What use do you have for an automatic gun, a gun that was originally designed for war, designed specifically to kill people? It is so easy that Martin Bryant didn’t even need a gun license, but he was still able to come into possession of two *mind me LEGAL* military-grade rifles, now I ask you, how and in what world is this just?
Port Arthur was the final straw, the breaking point for us Australians who now live in fear of another shooting, it could be you, your parents, your children, or your loved ones. ANYONE can be a victim of gun violence.
The movement to ban guns has been around for many years, it didn’t just get created out of thin air I know Australia is a gun-loving country and some of you are probably thinking ‘What right does he have to say I can’t own a gun’
The fact Is that most of you are good law-abiding citizens who wouldn’t even think about using them for the wrong purposes. But not everyone is, and
over the past 16 years, Australia has borne witness to hundreds of firearm homicides and 15 mass shootings, with a total homicidal mortality count of 813. Now just 4 days ago making it a total of 848 people died.
Do you still think owning a gun is worth it?
Now, we may not be able to prevent the mindset of people wanting to proceed with a mass shooting, but we can take away the tools capable of causing one, to prevent such an event from reoccurring in the future.
So, I ask you to take a stand with me, to put an end to firearms once and for all in this country.
