In today’s society, technology is rapidly developing and evolving, but is it causing this generation’s children to become negatively impacted? This subject is very interesting to me because of my current studies on speech pathology. Many other students and I learn about disorders that often affect young children and knowledge on this matter will assist me when determining the cause of the patient’s problem. Also, this topic is especially fascinating because it could play a role in causing developmental complications and delays, which is a tricky concept that I will have to diagnose when I start my future career. Nevertheless, I am choosing an article titled “Will Technology Ruin Your Children’s Development,” and will attempt to expand on the idea that technological advancements can be harmful to young children during their developmental stage, and how kids socially interact within this technology-dependent generation.

The article states an important key concept, “technology changes the way kids socialize and interact with others, which can have huge impacts on their mental and emotional well-being.” This statement is significant in playing a huge role in developmental delays with speech and language or with emotional and social skills. By spending too much valuable time on smart phones or tablets, parents are letting their children waste hours that can benefit them and give them the necessary opportunities to get effectively educated. These countless hours with technology often negatively impact the child. For instance, a babysitter might give a child a phone or tablet when taking care of them instead of playing outside or inside games. This allows the kid to participate in screen time without designated hours, which ultimately can lead to a technological addiction at an early age. This addiction at a young age can lead to many emotional and social delays that can cause the child serious consequences; these delays include not developing deep and meaningful relationships, not understanding social cues, and allowing the child to not interact and socialize with peers. The article expressed that children who spend too much time with technology often “have a hard time developing emotion the same way as other kids….and not enough time being engaged while in the presence of others.” This declaration of facts is completely necessary to understand and should be widely shared around the world for parents to understand the negative impact screen time can cause on a developing mind.

There have been many scientific studies performed to show the harmful effects of screen time. However, the most thought-provoking and concerning study fundamentally shows that children with numerous hours of screen time have a decrease in the cortex prematurely. Scientists can determine through MRI scans that there is a remarkable distinction of a young child who has a regular and healthy brain, and that of a child who is engrossed with technology. These interesting investigations help some individuals get a vague idea of the harmful effects but fail to educate the general public about helpful solutions. Language tests, reading tests, and thinking tests are an excellent way to examine if smartphones, tablets, or even video games are rewiring the brain at such an early age. These three tests were given to children who spent more than two hours a day on these technological resources to discover if the discussion about screen time was true, or just a rumor. Nevertheless, the final results showed in favor of technology being harmful, which primarily meant, the more screen time, the lower the score. This concept is one of the biggest issues around the country, and even the world today, but a majority of the public does not spend enough time researching the side effects of screen time.

This subject is incredibly important to interpret and view as a damaging activity to children and their brain development and could be the reason behind many language delays, learning disorders, and a great number of cognitive issues. Studies also show that many families allow their child screen time before the age of one and allow them to get addicted to technology. This surprising fact would explain the symptoms of this digital drug, including slowing and damaging the development of the brain, abnormal speech patterns, and lack of social qualities. Also, among these facts, children who depend on technology are likely to have less ability to maintain focus and have a difficult time processing crucial information. Childhood is the most important time for education and learning simple skills that will mature later in their lives; however, screen time and numerous hours with technology have claimed long-term effects on the brain. This time in a child’s life is a very critical period and if deprived of these cognitive functions, there are aspects and are of the brain that will not become fully mature, which will cause a delay. Without the continual development of speech and language, this will negatively impact children and force them to establish a speaking delay or disorder. Also, smartphones and tablets possess a large sum of apps and games that are amusing and entertaining for young children. These exciting features let children interact with the app and are essentially used to preoccupy them, but instead, these factors diminish the need for creative thinking.

This characteristic is a key principle to thriving in the real world and is a vital quality that children must possess in the early years of their lives to expand on this trait and become functioning members of society. Technology and screen time have affected the way this generation functions in every aspect of our lives. From the time individuals wake up in the morning, to the time they go to sleep, technology is a part of their routine. Although there are positive factors of these technological advances if used in moderation, most people do not limit the time their daily use of screen time, which eventually leads to allowing their children access to smartphones, tablets, computers, and television for countless hours a day. Another factor that ties into this subject is the issue of social interaction among children. Personal communication is an essential skill that needs to be developed at a young age to establish a major concept that is significant in everyday life. Due to the growth of new devices, video games, and tablets, social skills in this generation have taken a turn for the worse. In previous years, before the obsessive usage of smartphones, children would interact together, come up with creative games to play, and rely solely on their imagination to have fun. However, in today’s society, a child’s form of communication likely comes from sending messages over the internet or social media, which has a large role to play with the problem of not being able to communicate well in person.

By taking away the devices, and forcing children to interact, this could create a mindset that will allow the child to understand the importance of human relationships and face-to-face contact at an early age. This article about technology and about how it could be harmful to the brain development of children opened my eyes to the negative effects that many people allow themselves to get caught up in every day. By reading, agreeing, and expanding on this essay, my knowledge in this subject grew, as did my opinions about the use of technology for young children. The main concept of this article was to acknowledge the fact that under certain circumstances, screen time can be extremely dangerous and can cause long-term effects. I wanted to expand on this topic to address the hazard of not limiting screen time and focus on the terrible results it causes. With a career path that is leading to helping children to gain complete function of speaking and comprehending language, I feel like this is a subject I should begin to understand, so that I may know how to diagnose and treat these disorders due to unlimited technology. The overall consequences of this growing problem in this generation today are difficult to ignore and affect the vast majority of children in the world. However, by limiting screen time for young kids, allowing them to grow their understanding through educational aspects, and using technology for useful projects and valuable research, this generation could ultimately have a higher quality of life.
