In the end, I ran”. In The Kite Runner, the themes of loyalty and betrayal go hand in hand, as the people closest to the characters are the root of the disloyalty and are important in explaining the conflicts in the story. Betrayal and loyalty are opposites as loyalty is compared to support, love, and friendship these traits are seen in Hassan but betrayal is associated with dishonesty and backstabbing these traits of betrayal are seen in Amir which makes them very different and explains their conflicts. The biggest betrayal in the novel is between Hassan and Amir the author sets the scene with Hassan being loyal to his brother Amir he says “for you a thousand times over” which demonstrates he would do anything for him. Hassan is portrayed as selfish and jealous because he feels he deserves special privileges from his father that Hassan shouldn't have due to this selfishness he always puts himself on a higher pedestal. Hassan's loyalty to Amir is shown when Amir wins a kite contest and he wants to get the kite for Amir to keep. He is chased by street boys because they want it to, Hassan is face to face with being beaten and rape out of loyalty for his friend while his “best friend” Amir watches and does nothing from a distance.“I aspired to cowardice, because the alternative, the real reason I was running, was that Assef was right: Nothing is free in this world. Maybe Hassan was the price I had to pay, the lamb I had to slay, to win Baba.” (ch.7 68). This act of betrayal shed light on how disloyal Amir was. He traded his friend's innocence for the acceptance of his father. This moment would haunt Hassan.
