“We Are the World” was written by Michael Jackson and Lionel Richie. Quincy Jones produced the song in 1985. This song is about a widespread famine that was going on at the time. The USA Africa is a nonprofit organization that was going through a famine at the time Jackson recorded the song and video. Proceeds from the song and video were then used to feed and relieve people enduring the famine. The song shows the importance of diverse backgrounds coming together and raising money to support an amazing cause. The song is important to me because usually things like this are blown off. Also, it shows that no matter your race or ethnic background, you can come together to help those in need. Watching the energy, the musicians had in the video, shows that they enjoyed coming together and helping with the famine.
Like most of his music, “We Are the World” is a pop genre. There were numerous other musicians featured in the song such as Diana Ross, Billy Joel, Ray Charles, and many others. So many musicians being incorporated into the song was more than likely to show how different races and ethnic backgrounds can come together. Even though Africa is halfway across the world where they speak a different language and have different beliefs from the musicians, they still were willing to come together to support them during their time of need. At the beginning of the song Lionel Richie says, “There comes a time when all have to come together”. From this line, that’s exactly what each artist demonstrates, that everyone should come together as one no matter their differences. There is also a line that says, “We’re all a part of God’s big family”, this line is to let listeners know that we are in no way, shape, or form different from anyone else in God’s eyes and we are all family in God’s eyes. The overall lyrics of this song are about coming together and giving back. Giving back will make a change in the world. Another line of the song is “We are the ones who make a brighter day, so let’s start giving.” This is saying that we can make the world brighter just by giving back to those in need and mostly coming together as one as God would want us to.

In the song “We Are the World” each artist paints a picture of a sense of place that everyone in the world should come together despite religion, ethnic, and racial background. The phrase “We are the world, we are the children” is repeated numerous times throughout the song to remind the listener that no matter what, we all make up the world despite differences. Everyone has to live in this world as one or the world would be divided. There is no harm in coming together during famine and crisis, however, it shouldn’t only take tough times for different racial, ethnic, and religious backgrounds to make the world come together. These musicians didn’t have to help with this cause, but they did anyway. It’s not a crime to speak up, and it’s not a crime to help. During a time like the famine crisis in Africa, we should come together and help one another. For that matter, we should come together at any time, and not just blow it off like the government tends to. The government helps only when they feel the need to help. The musicians in this song didn’t need the government to help out, they made their own decisions to be a part of this song and video, just as well as giving the proceeds to the “USA Africa” organization to help feed those during the famine.
