Technology has made life so convenient that the thought of being without it, is so dreadful. In this digital era, technology plays a huge role in one’s life. However, if misused, it can take over one’s life. The constant contact we have with technological devices such as mobile phone and computers allows us to always stay connected and be updated with recent news and information. Technological advancements have their advantages in one’s life. However, moderation is the key. Depending on technology, ironically, has a number of consequences which are very detrimental to one’s health. According to the research by Thomee, Harenstam,Hagberg (2011), over indulgence and addiction to mobile phones may affect one’s sleep patterns causing health problems which may lead to depression. Overdependence on technology does not only cause mental health problems, rather it also causes physical health problems. Dry eyes, blurred vision, double vision, fatigue and headaches are some of the health problems as a result of prolonged usage of computers and mobile phones. Technology has brought us to a point where everything is very accessible from the comfort of our homes thus opening doors for a more sedentary lifestyle. Before the advancements of technology, jobs back in the days were more physical. However now, jobs are more desk bound restricting our mobility. Physical indolence increases the threat of health problem such as cancers, anxiety, depression, certain cardiovascular diseases, osteoporosis, high blood pressure and even elevated cholesterol levels. Restriction of mobility and lack of physical activity are the main factors causing the health problems mentioned above. Overdependence on technology has made us very lazy, restricting our movements and causing us to be incapable to meet the minimum physical activity guidelines and thus putting us at risk of developing health issues. As mentioned earlier on, excessive dependence on technology and living a sedentary lifestyle has many negative implications on one’s health.
