Protecting cultural heritage is very important to address mostly in Middle Eastern countries, were this issue is abundant. Many conflict zones have been involved in this issue due to terrorism recently or in past years which has as its main focus to destroy cultural heritage from the country such as manuscripts, mosques and monuments. Protecting cultural heritage is very important because it keeps the people integrity by reflecting the personal shape of values, beliefs and aspirations. My delegation cares about this issue because it not only causes damage to the cultural heritage of the country, but also as the Malian country has realized, destroying religious and historic monuments in Mali affects the soul and spirit of the people, because the rebels have destroyed the mosques were people faith live. The Malian government is willing to protect the cultural heritage of the country so eventually my delegation could get rid of it.
Cultural heritage destruction in Mali has reduced within the years. There was a horrible case in 2012 named the Malian Civil War, when Amadou was still president, in which Ahmad al-Faqi al-Mahdi, an Islamic militant part of al-Qaeda, destroyed 14 out of 16 mausoleums in Timbuktu inscribed in UNESCO'S World Heritage List. Where 4,000 out of 40,000 manuscripts were lost. He was condemned to 9 years of imprisonment. To preserve the remaining 36,000 manuscripts, The Malian government sent them to Bamako were they are being conserved and hidden for their safety and also have been digitized to ensure the effective preservation of this documentary heritage. Another action that has been implemented , is the training of local personnel by UNESCO members to ensure lasting preservation which will give the people of Mali the strength and confidence to rebuild national unity.

My country has lowered the numbers of destruction of cultural heritage in many parts of the country and mostly in Timbuktu. Right now, there is a plan in Mali to rebuild the Timbuktu that is divided in four stages. The first and second stage has been accomplished, but to continue with the third and fourth stage, Mali needs $5 million dollars in which $3 million dollars have been raised thanks to worldwide funds such as The heritage programme by UNESCO that provides funds in the country to raise money to reconstruct damaged heritage , the city’s cultural heritage preservation by the Malian Government that raises awareness of the problem in the country by posters, conferences and radio announcements , and Protecting cultural property by the Government of France organization that raises money with funds in France and then send it to Mali, to mention a few. Also, Mali and neighbouring countries have mobilized in order to avoid as much as possible the thefts and illicit export of Malian cultural properties. Mali is also member of organizations such as UNESCO, The Hague Convention of 1954 and ICRC.
Ending cultural heritage destruction requires work and effort from everyone. To conclude, Mali has come up with good solutions to solve the issue. For example, when my country was encountering constant attacks toward the heritage, rapidly the government sent military reinforcements to protect the borders between countries and to Timbuktu, because of the attacks that took place there, caused by terrorist groups and foreign people. Also, the actual president of Mali, Ibrahim, has been very clever and began to export gold, cotton and livestock to China, Switzerland, Bangladesh, India, Thailand and Indonesia to raise money and pay the rebuilding of Timbuktu and Gao. There has also been two publications created on the cultural heritage of Timbuktu, Gao and Kidal. The principal is a illustrated guide and the second publication is a leaflet called “Heritage Passport” that gives point by point information on the location and importance on cultural sites in Mali. They were made to create awareness among army, NGO’s and the community about the importance of the protection and preservation of cultural heritage. So, in conclusion, some effective ways to reduce cultural heritage attacks in my country and others is by implementing a good border security and partnering up with countries and organizations to battle this issue together.
